Looking to add Torque and HP. Going to upgrade my 88" to a 95". I have been doing a bunch of reading. There are a few articles that really press the issue of power that is useful. Power that starts at a low RPM range. Some of the articles ignore peak Torque and HP and focuses on the Mid Range power used during normal riding conditions. One of the articles describes the changes. Included is the Flat Top Wiseco piston kit and boring services. Additionally, Andrew push rods and the Andrews Cam TW21 Cam Set. Good air flow and exhaust. Nothing major or radical is done. The result is 94 ft lbs. Torque and 80 horsepower. What is interesting is the power curve is very consistent.

Any opinions on high peaks vs. what is described as useable midrange power.

Thanks!

Theres nothing wrong with high peaks as long as they are where you want them...which all depends on how you ride your bike. In my opinion the TW-21 cam is too little. If you are going big bore, I'd use domed pistons or get the heads ported and milled to raise the compression to the vicinity of 10 to 1. Then run the Andrews TW-37 cams which come on strong low but hold that power all the way through the normal operators rev range.

Check out what can be done with the TW-37 cam...

If you want to stay with stock heads and flat top pistons...atleast get the cometic .03" metal head gaskets for a tighter squish and slightly higher compression then run a cam like the Andrews TW-26.

There are lots of other good cams...but the two I mention are some of the most well respected performers for their intended application. You are on the right track...read and do lots of research before you buy for your build. I found online forums a little too late and foolishly spent more money than I had to. I now am a member of several of these forums and I've learned so much and can even help out people like you who are where I was at four years ago.
