Got an 02 Fatboy, getting a new paint job here in Louisville KY. Got a small problem in the horizon. I noticed that when I remove my seat, a badlander. I have scratches on the fender under it. I finally got permission from the boss to get this done and want to ensure that nothing stupid happens to it. I am looking to see if there is some kind of kit or fit I can do to this seat to strenthen it so it will not sag in the middle and rub on the fender under the passengers seat. I also had the same kind of problem with the stock seat. It does not matter if I have a passenger or not it still scratches the fender.
Hope to get feed back for this, you can e mail me at PPlayle@aol.com with replies

Thanks Playle

If the concern is a scratched paint job UNDER the seat, place a soft cloth between the seat and the fender. Won't stop the scratches, but definitely will slow them down. If you're wanting something to keep the seat elevated, you're gonna have to do something custom, at which anyway I look at it, is going to defeat the look AND the comfort other than going with an old springer seat. Bottom line is, how often does someone look under the seat of your bike, and among those few, how many scratches are you going to find on THEIR fender?

You can also attach a piece of leather to the bottom of the seat as a barrier bwtween the seat and the bike. As bikerjim already stated, this will only slow down the scratches, not stop them.

I have come across people that use a thick plastic film that adheres to the paint and allows the seat base to shift without scrubbing. If you take some thin office type carpet and glue it to the contact points on the seat pan that might work.

I do have to ask if it really does matter?
