Exhaust pipe coming out of the rear cylinder is coated on the inside with a sooty deposit that is somewhat sticky. Any ideas? Front exhaust pipe burns clean. Bike has only 4700 miles on it. Many thanks.

Somewhat sticky deposits on the inside?
O.K., I wont go there.
Probably just blow-by, maybe from drive belt?
Check for the obvious,,,oil from rocker covers, oil lines, trans.
If oil is leaking onto your pipe you will smell it.

Good luck.

I am going to go with the fact that there are no complaints with the running and performance of this 883.
Two things come to mind when I hear rear cylinder anything.
1. The fact that the rear pipe has a resedue could mean more than likley one of the following. #2 cylinder is going to be naturally hotter than #1. This leaves the results of heat. Valve guide wear, allowing oil to get sucked in and blown out. Rings to colapse, or get gummed up in the ring groves, especially that oil ring. That will cause blow by and produce the same problem.
2. The other thing that jumps out is: Are the spark plugs the same heat range? Gap? And last of all, Are there any air leaks between the carb and cylinder head?
I understand that these are not all easy for every one to check. There are a few things that are. A manual will break it down, then you can decide how far you want or are able to go.
