Hey all I just this morning picked up a 81 sporty. I'm told it's a 1200 but I've yet to document that.

The bike has been setting in a guy I work with livingroom for the last 6 years. The motor has 600 miles on a rebuild.

I need to know if I should pull all the covers off and the plugs out, and oil her up before I try to start it.

THe tank appears to be clean but I'll be taking the carb off and tearing it apart to make sure it isn't all varnished up.

I also need to know what kind and what weight oil I should be using in it. I've been a Valvoline kinda guy for my race cars, street vehicles and dirt bikes. Should I go synthetic or fossil.

Thanks to one and all in advance.

I would drain the tank completely, make sure it's got fresh fuel,

Change out the fuel line and like you said pull and check the carb.

Wouldn't be a bad Idea to pull the plugs

Change the oil and filter too

Any 20W-50 motorcycle oil will work.

A good synthetic will work better over time, IE not break down, you can run mobil 1 Vtwin, etc.

After that leave plugs out and get it turning over and the oil going through the system

Install plugs and see if she fires up.

THanks HotRoadKing. Thats exactly what I did. Wouldn't run with out hand choking till I pulled the carb. All the jets were plugged with varnish but the tank was spotless. I replaced all the hoses and filters changed the oil, rolled her thru for a few minutes with out the pluggs in. Put the plugs in, touched the starter button and vrooom. She runs and rides great. I just have to have some new brake hoses made because she ain't all stock.

Go Braided SS lines, they don't give like the rubber lines they look cool but they absolutely work better.

If you need new brake pads go Lyndal Racing Brakes Pads - Zpads they should have them here at DP, you should also flush the brake system fluids if it's been sitting that long, and make sure the tires are really in good shape.
