Hello, Al Bullard here. I recently bought a 1985 Sportster. I also have a 2001 Road King. I got the sporty just because it was pretty and price was good. It is the last year before the evo. Any way. it passed emisions just fine after
Blue sky tuned it a bit. My problem: I have not installed a tach yet so I do not know what rpm it happens at. Top speed for this bike is 72 to 73. The enjine then sputters coughs backfires. I let off and it mellows out but just wont cruise at highway speeds. I am probably asking this too soon as I have niot counted my teeth yet and do not know if it has 47 0r 51. I have had a 1974 and a 1976 sporty and they both would do 90 to 95. Any info or reeply would be appreciated

the bike is starving for fuel.....check all filters......in tank and in line... check float level. check to see if the carb is the proper one for the model. someone may have done some modifing to the jets, and didnt quite get them right. have fun with it.....
