I need a little help with a super high idle. Recently purchased bike, 98 ultra classic, 80ci, EFI, 15,000. I have put about 1500 miles on it since I purchased it. It ran great. Today coming in to work the idle stayed around 2800 when I came to a stop. Another 10 miles I stopped again and it only dropped to 1500. It ran smooth at highway speeds. No popping etc. One note is that the temp this morning is around 30 F. Shore could use some help quick. I plan to ride to Florida this afternoon.

i dont have a lot of experience with efi's, but i do know that the idle is handled by the puter. the throttle body is preset with a plug covering the adjustment. i am not sure if they have a "cold weather" idle on efi's. if so a sensor may be bad. i would get it checked out at a dealer, or and indy that has the equipment to diagnose.........

I have EFI.....Idle is higher (like someplace around 2k or just a bit more) when the weather is cold. The colder it is, the longer it stays there. The one thing that I have noticed is that the idle does drop on its own and at about the same time, I start to notice that the engine starts putting off some warm heat...not hot, but you can start to feel warmth. I just try to keep off the throtle if I am still idleing high....let things get warmed up a bit before I "get on it". Hope this helps....not sure if the problem you are talking about is exactly this, but......

As you can tell by my user name I have a 98 RK EFI. I only road below 30F once by accident in a freak snow storm in Flagstaff in the middle of G-- Da-- August. I hope I never do that again. Sturgis. 04 was F-- cold!!

So, back to your problem, this high idle thing has never happened to me but I will tell you that you and I have a small idle screw that you can f-- with if you really need to. It is on the lower right corner of the throttle body gasket face area. But you only want to do this when it is warm outside and warmed up and you have a tach. If your problem is intermittant then I would guess that your problem is ice accumulating on the throttle plates. I don't think there is anything you can do about it.

How'd your trip t Florida go?

The MM is different that the Delphi in a lot of ways. One being throttle and idle control. The Delphi ECU controls idle via the temp sensor. The MM idle is controlled via the temp sensor and the cold and hot idle adjustments. The hot idle is behind the backing plate and the cold out side on the stepper motor.
Adjusting either of these after a sudden idle change should be a last resort thing. From a mechanical viewpoint, the adjustment didn't change so why should an adjustment be needed? Check the intake for leaks, throttle cable for binding, and the TPS for proper adjustment first. To check all of the EFI, get the service manual and follow the tree. Guessing at trouble shooting can get expensive. I suspect that the TPS is either out of adjustment range or might need cleaning.
