hi guys, im looking to buy my first harley. rode jap bikes all my life now having said that ive never even rode a harley but one WILL be my next bike. (looking at 79 flh)after hearing all the story's about how unreliable a shovel is im kinda leary of them. i dont mind some wrenching (on a sunny day in the back yard)but im looking for a fairly reliable ride should i go with a evo? or is a well built amd maintaned shovel good too?

If you love to wrench then get a Shovel, there isn't any thing wrong it's just these bikes were built back in the AMF days, and require a lot more work than any other newer motor,

The evo is tried trued and tested, a later model evo in the mid to later 90's is a good bike.

FWIW a carb model twin cam from 99 to current year is a great buy, the FL series and I believe dynas have TC motors from 99 these are referred to as TC88 A motors

Softails got a different version in 00 and it is referred to as a TC88B motor because it is counterbalanced. Many will say the balancers limit the performance but my 116 B motor says otherwise.

The balancers eliminate the vibration the shovel and evo softails used to have, completely different animal. If your wallet can swing it and you want a softail step up to the 00 and up Twin Cam is a major improvement.

The FL series and dynas are rubber mounted motors so they are not balanced and they use rubber mounts to soften vibration, it works well.

If you are not sure about models, you can test ride them at any major event, Sturgis, Daytona, Laconia, etc.

Or rent a FL and a softail to compare for a day's riding.

if ya like to tinker and wrench on your own bike, i know of a 1965 electra glide, (panhead) for sale,,,the bike has less than 5000 miles since complete rebuild......color is blue/white...... ........welcome to the forum!!!!!!!!

Funny....I'm having the selling a bike blues.

I've had several Harley's and have had the pleasure of wrenching on several others. My personal favorite is the 1340 EVO. Only because they are proven dependable and there are a lot of good, affordable deals if you look around.

I agree that the 88" twin cams are a nicer motor but they haven't been around long enough to find really good deals on them.

The Shovels are nice but do require a bit more wrenching. You can find them pretty cheap though.
