I purchased this 1979 ironhead 1000cc sportster from a pawn shop and it diddnt run. dont realy know anything about whats been done before, to this bike.
I installed a set of points and got my bike running. but one problem it will only hit on the front cylender. the pipes not getting hot on the back pipe. I did check for fire on the rear one and it is sparking correctly. it has 120 psi compression on the rear and 110 psi on the front cylender I also lookied inside the cylender and it apeares that both valves are opening and closing. when Im giving it gas it does mist out the carb. compression - fuel - spark - should hit. I also replaced the plug wire and also the plug. I also switched sides of the coil and still hits on the front but not on the back. I have adjusted the points every way posible. when I adjust the point plate all the way clockwise it seems to want to hit a little on the rear cylender but very little. the advance weights are working corectly also. I just cant figure this one out. as usual its probily somthing small Im just overlooking but who knows.
let me know if you all ave any ideas that I could try or if you have ran across this before.

there is a timing plug on the side of the engine. remove the plug, and the spark plugs, and the point cover. use your manual to set the flywheels to the proper position in the hole. then adjust the points. it is easier to raise the rear wheel off the ground and rotate the engine with the wheel, if you have no kicker. someone may have removed the dist and got it back in the wrong place, or changed a cam. it sounds like a timing problem

Cool

I checked the timing marke and where the position ot the cam on the points runner was. That all checked out good. so I desided to check the coil outy with my fluke meter and it shows only 3.6 ohms of resistance from one poast to the other. should have 4.7 - 5.7 ohms. the thing that trew me off on this one was the fact that no matter what plug hole I had the wire in it would not hit on the rear cylender just the front. so I figured it was somthing else.
let me know what you think. I will purchase one shortly and let you know.
Thanks Bill
