Well, thought i had it figured, but it still leaks. I got a 2000 American Ironhorse Classic with the 96ci. S&S. The Primary used to leak a while back but figured it was the drain plug and fixed it with a little teflon tape. Now the leaks back and teflon has not fixed it. It's a little difficult to determine exactly where the leak is coming from. My concearn is that could it be leaking from behind the primary? Like from the where the shaft that exists the primary and goes into the tranny? Could it have a bad seal there?? |

| Question is, primary chaincase lube, or motor oil that it's leaking? If it's outer primary, probably (hopefully) just the gasket. Remove and purchase new gasket.
Other than that, you may need to warm it up, take 'er for a spin, wipe it down good when you get back, and watch for the telltale drip and where it's coming from. | |

| For those pesky leaks that won't go away try tasting and smelling the fluid. Gear lubes have a distinct smell and flavor and are much more viscous than primary juice.
Still not locating it? Lift the bike up to where you can clean the underside of the primary and the inner and the area between the tranny and the primary. Go to NAPA and get two different color tubes of fluorescent dye and add a little to the primary and a different color to the tranny. Go for ride and when you get back use a black light and I guarantee you will find the source.
BTW, it is a very bad idea to over torque or add too much Teflon tape to the drain plug as you can crack the outer primary cover. | |

There is a chance it maybe coming from the trans. Clean around the trans and primary then park the bike as close to level as possible all things being equal if the trans is not over full the oil level is below the seal no leak. Next night same thing only put bike on side stand if trans seal is bad you will have oil on the floor. This may seem a little silly but if you have time it will help to show what may or may not be leaking. Dutch | |
