I've read a lot on this issue in previous posts but here's my specific problem. Had the SE slip-ons, air intake and re-map done at dealer before I picked er up. Only have 500 miles on it. Bike starts great and runs perfect on acceleration. The problem is, while holding a steady throtle in the mid gears it feels like the motor has a miss or a surge. But when I roll the throtle it's all there. The plugs look lean to me and the exhaust tips don't have any carbon build up at all. The dealer says nothing can be done except for a PC or other fuel managment system, which will void the warranty. I guess I don't understand , after laying out 20 G's for this bike, that I have to live with this problem for two years !! Anyone else have this problem ? Any sugestions on how to deal with it ? Is it possible that the re-map didn't take? Or is there more than one download available ? I plan to take it back again, but looking for some anti-BS ammunition to lay on the service manager. Thanks for any help you guys (or gals) can provide.

Had the same issue with an 06 dyna. They did a remap on it with a different download and it solved the issue. the plugs are now a light tan color and the popping I was getting on decelleration have gone.

Might want to speak with service manager. A fuel delivery system will not void the warranty unless it is installed incorrectly. Sounds like the dealer is feeding you some Bullsh!t. If they can't fix it, then they should be refunding the money they charged you to do the service in the first place. good luck.

While I understand that 2006's are different, I can tell you what the dealer did with my bike to get it to run better, a 2004 fatboy. After experinceing similar problems after a stage 1 package was put on the dealer re-flashed the bike with a 1550 download and the bike has run perfectly ever since- The service tech stated that the regular stage 1 flash is still to lean under most circumstances-

I would say Buy a power commander. to hell with the dealership and if they are any good they will still warranty the bike.

Thanks guys for your input on this issue.I just picked up my scoot from dealer. They replaced injectors( 8 degree to 25 degree) and did a performance download. In the few short miles to get home, I feel a significant improvement in the way she runs. No more surge on steady throttle. In all due respect to my dealer, they did good. Thanks again for the responses ; they did help. (62 year old with bugs on my face and the wind in my heart.) Skipperm.

Question

What's the story with the injectors? This is the second thing I have read about problems with them. I am assuming HD has a service bulletin or something published on these, if they are replacing them with a different part. Anyone have any additional information on this?

Hey Yankeerl; From what i've heard, some 2006 twins have 8 degree squirts, which I guess limit the fuel flow (EPA mandated ) In other words run lean. The replacment injectors are 25 degrees, and are covered under warranty. However, if you have them replaced, the new ECU download is not covered if you've done a stage 1. I had it done , paid $150 to avoid hassle from dealer. As I said in my post ,the results were worth the $$$ . Skipperm

It seems that the MoCo knows all about this. You won't hear about it as a recall though. Strictly a service bulletin. If you don't bring the issue up, you probably won't hear about the "fix" that is easily handled under your warranty!

Supposedly, if your 2006 bike was made BEFORE February of 2006, you qualify for the correction. All 2006's from February on are already having this correction done directly on the production line.

My 06 FLSTFI seems to be fine, so far. I know two other people that have an 06 UltraGlide and an 06 Road King Classic. They mentioned this service bulletin and were told that the stealer would fix it under warranty, no problem, and they didn't even mention that they were experiencing any real-world problems yet. Makes you think that everyone should do it, regardless of whether you are experiencing the problems or not yet. Especially if the MoCo feels that it is important enough to begin doing on their own production line!

Check out the link below for the service bulletin. Don't tell anyone that you got it from me though!

Thanks Boomshaw....! I printed that one off just in case....
Since I bought my '06 in October '05 this might become a problem on mine too.
So far have had a few cases of popping while riding and stall after cold startup, not sure if it's related, but seems like the new injectors might fix potential problems.

Ya stevenh, you may want to just drop into your stealer and see what they say when you bring the subject up. I got my bike in early September of 05. I have checked the injectors like they said and I do have the three nozzle 06's, instead of the new six nozzle 06A's.

Mention that you HAVE experienced some popping and cold start stalls, even if they be minor. I bet they will offer to do the work with little hesitation if you do. Like I said, if they are doing it for the rest of the 06 production year, there must be something to it. Even if it hasn't yet raised it's ugly head. It all depends on whether your local stealer has a mechanic that can knock the work out in 1.1 hours or less!

Try not to show that service bulletin unless you really feel the need to prove your point. Some service managers I have heard flip out and get all upset if you come in waving such things in their face and putting them on the defensive with a paper that you are not really supposed to have! Give em a chance to do you right, then fire away.

Most dealers will be up front about TSB's but, some hesitate thinking they are doing H-D a favor. This TSB has a trouble shooting tree and if the tree traces down to the "replace injectors" step, immediately after that is "update ECM calibration".

Note that this a "Required dealer action" and if you are under warranty it is covered by H-D.

Any Service Manager getting upset over being shown a TSB sould be reported to H-D customer service for not providing proper service.

Also, warrantees are not voided by fuel tuning devices unless H-D can prove it caused the failure.

Thanks guys...
I Think I'll mention it next time I'm there. Figure it can't hurt to have new injectors put in. Also, this bike seems to be fuel sensitive. I filled it up today and it seems to be running better. It was already hot though. Will see in the AM if it runs better.

Boomshaw, I am having trouble opening the link to the TSB. Do have it in a format you can email?

Thanks,

Been off to the mountains. Sorry for the delayed reply yankeerl. The file is in Adobe PDF format. Download and install the free pdf viewer from adobe.com. Then go back to the link and it should pop up for you without any action on your part. You may then save it to your desktop (or elsewhere) for purusing later.

I just went to the site where the TSB is and it opened fine for me. Do the above and try again. If it still doesn't work, let me know.

As I previously posted, the dealer changed out the injectors ( to 25 degrees) and re-mapped with P/N 34392-06 (which I paid for, assuming it was a performance re-map).While the surging is gone, now I get serious popping on deceleration. The plugs are still what I call white and the exhaust tips look gold colored. ( so do the pipes under the shield ). Am I still lean ? Also does any one know the P/N for the new performance re-map ? ( 1550 ) I'm about ready to go for a PC before I smoke the d#&*# thing !! Thanks for any input. Skipperm

Well, not to put too fine a point on it but, think you have to realize some of the members here are trying to steer you straight.

I would put a ding-dang fuel management device on it and quit listening to that dealer! Your dealer could supply enough fertilizer for a farm.
