| What year is it? If it is indeed electric, then it has the sensor on the tranny like Jim sez.
If it is mechanical, the cable can be dry and needs lube. With light oil NOT a Moly type as it dries out and makes it worse. Could also be the drive unit flaking out. Usually a bad or dry cable shows up as motion in the cable housing and erratic readings...A bad speedo usually is right then wrong then wobbly etc.
If you have an electronic speedo the sensor is probably covered with shavings and needs to be cleaned. Remove it, wipe it off and hit it with some carb cleaner and reinstall. BTW, those nice metal flakes are telling you that it is time to do a hot tranny juice change.
OOP's just noticed it is a '99...if it is an H-D and stock it is electric. If it is a custom, all of the above still applies. |
