starter rotates but will not disengage

1985 FLHT with a Drag Specalties high torque starter

Problem/Help - Starter rotates but will not disengage after pressing the start button. I had to disconnect the battery cable to get the starter to stop turn on several attempts to crank the engine. Kill switch has no effect on the situation. Battery cables get really hot during this time.

I have replaced the solenoid and still had the same thing happen several times.

Tell me - what the heck is going on here ???

Welcome to the forum Zenon9, my guess would've been the solenoid too. If you post this at the "Tech Talk" forum, you'll probably get plenty of responses. Hope you find your answer......ride safe!

get the service manual out and check where the start relay is at. when you push the button the relay supplies the power to the solonoid. if the relay is hanging, it will not kill the power to the solonoid........have fun!!!!!!

New S&S engine installed at Harley Dealer
Problem: Starter will not disengage
Installer put starter clutch oil seal in backwards. This caused jamming in reverse travel.
Solution: Removed outer primary replaced oil seal and sanded starter clutch shaft. Replaced cover.
Problem: Starter now engages immediately when battery cables connect.
Solution: Replaced old starter relay with a new relay.

A Big Thanks to all who replied to my post.

All repairs were made in my gargage by me.

Been there - Done that - I feel you - Here it is - Go for it.

Thanks Again
