05 oil consumption

Hello all! I am new to the site hope and to find some help. Has anyone heard of excessive oil use in 05's???? (1.5 qts in 1000mi) My front plug is in BAD shape! (black with deposits) I took it to 1 dealer that told me I needed valve seals. Even showed me the service bullitin on the problem, said they would fix under warranty. (bike has 5400mi) Insted I opted to take it too my selling dealer 55mi away to have them do it along with my 5000mi service. Told them of the problem and they acted as if I was insane! Bike sat at dealler for 4 days. I called to see if was finished and they had not even looked at it. They said they were waiting for auth. from factory. I called factory and they said dealer never called about my bike. Factory called dealer and proceeded to tell them too wire tie my oil fill shut and to silicone my drain plug shut and for me too return in 1000mi. Is that a load of crap or what?? Anyone else with similar problems???? Help me if you can. Thank you!!!

It's standard for an oil consumption test prior to any repairs for consumption. I worked for GM for 5 years and we always requested a Consumption test prior to any warranty work for this. It rules out the possibility of a dealer/owner F@#& up. Just make sure they document what they are doing and keep it for your records. If the concern is brought to them prior to warranty expiration, and they need to verify the consumption...they will have to cover it under warranty. Service Bulletins dont mean a hell of a lot to most dealers, IMHO.

Good luck,

RL

I have an '05 ST and have put 7500 miles on it. I had the oil changed at 1000 and 5000 miles and it does not look like it has burned any from the start. It will be interesting to see what they do. Keep us informed.

It seems like they should have taken a look at the front plug like you mentioned. Seems like common sense if it is oil fouled you got a legitimate complaint. They could have cleaned the plug and road tested it to see if it fouls again. Is there a lot of smoke while going down the road?
Wonder if they will tear it down or give you a new motor.

Good luck!

My 96 burned oil from day 1. It used over 4 qts. in 2400 miles! At 8000 mi., the dealer took it apart. Rings were gone and valves were bad. All replaced. 1000 miles later....AGAIN it started to smoke. At 13,500 miles, they replaced the complete top end! All under warrauntee. BUT.... that was an Evo. 2 things,...1] there were no goofy do this first do that, blah blah etc. etc. They just took care of it. Your the 1st person Iv'e heard of with a twin cam oil problem. ( I don't read that much so....) 2nd] Go back to the other dealer who was going to fix it under warrantee and **** the local guy! When you get it back together, watch oil level religiously for a while. If it's pretty good but not perfect, use Amsoil and watch it again. It should improve. I used it in the 96 after the redo and did'nt use another drop! Not even after it had 38,000 miles on the rebuild! Love that Amsoil. Just my 2 cent

Yes there is a service bulletin out about oil consumption on the 05's and the first dealer sounds like the place to take it back to, forget the second dealer.

The test is plausable however there was an issue with leaking seals on some 05's.

Also I don't understand why the factory would have told them to do what you said, makes no sense in that a bulletin exists with a fix.
