Hello, I have a 98 Ultra Cycle, Ground Pounder with a S&S 113" Motor and a 5 speed trans. It has a S&S Super G Carb on it. I got the bike like 2 years ago and have had carb problems the whole time. I have been to 3 different shops now. And they have rebuilt this carb 6 times now. I am really getting extremely upset and confused as to why no one can fix this carburetor. Man, it's costing me alot of money too. The problems I'm having with this carb is....when you give it gas you hear a pop noise and the bike will stall. Another is when I down shift coming to a stop the bike will stall. I'm changing plugs every couple of weeks..they are black. When idoling when stopped the idol will go higher and lower by itself. That's just some examples. I have been reading of different products for this carb. some being a Thunder Jet Kit....your Davinci Power Kit..and a YOST power tube. Would any of these products help the problems that I'm having with this carburetor? Or do I need to get a new carb? Any info you can give would be a big help. Thank you for your time, Joe

Those carburetor modification kits mentioned are only good for getting better response out of that carb, but if its not tuned or operating correctly to begin with then you are not likely going to fix it. A few years ago the S&S carbs received a modification that added a bleed jet inside. I think the older version just had a hole or passage. One of the S&S guys out at the Laughlin motorcycle run 2 years ago told me that this jet was added to resolve some high speed fouling problems. Then again, I've heard these same guys blow smoke about other stuff they were simply guessing about.

Here's my own personaly opinion... someone may jump in and think different. I've never been a big fan of the Super G unless used in race applications. To me if you are set on a S&S then the Super E is a good carb for anything up to your engine size. Bigger isn't always better and a buddy of mine has pulled better numbers with his Super E than other customs or harleys with the Super G.

Opinion #2 - if it were me I'd stop washing money and gas down that carburetor and go with a Mikuni HSR45. On big-inch motors I swear by both the 42 and 45. IMHO these carbs have the cleanest response when used on large displacement engines.

If it were me, I'd have thrown that damn thing in the garbage after the 2nd or 3rd rebuild and bought a new one. Simply for the fact that the rebuilds were costing me a small fortune. I'm sorry I can't offer much help, but I'm sure someone will have a decent answer. I just appreciate your frustration, I have had carb problems on another bike of mine and it is difficult when you don't understand how to fix them. Good luck and keep us posted! See I waited too long, I knew Ken would have some input.

as stated, the e carb is probably the better of the two for hiway use.....one thing you state is the up/down of the idle. this concerns me a bit....have you checked for intake leaks?? use a little wd 40 and spray some around the manifold, throttle shaft, to see if the idle changes....keep us informed

Thumbs up

Thank you guys for your input.
The cycle shop just called me and said that he did not find any intake leaks and that he down sized the jets. Well here we go again!! ha,ha, Have any of you seen this new carb from Davinci called the FirePower Carburetor? This thing looks awesome. If my garb acts up one more time then I am going to do what you guys said and just get a new carb. ether a Mikuni or the new Davinci. I will let you guys know what happens. Thank you so much for your time, Harleyc

OK now that we've tossed it out and beat it with a stick the E and G are good carbs and pretty easy to tune.

That G should work on a 113 as we have an elbruto 113 and it comes with a G, sounds to me like the people doing the tuning don't know jack or you have a bad carb.

S&S has a super tech support line, call them and discuss what is going on.

They wil help you

Also go to www.sscycle.com and download the manual for that carb.

You have to set the carb up right and it sound rich.

Do you know anything about the carb, the main and pilot jet numbers?

If not turn off the gas at the petcock, remove the air cleaner and backing plate, be careful to not screw up the enricher.

Then put a tuna fish can (empty) under the carb and remove the bowl nut, and drain out the gas., you can see the main but not the pilot jet (intermediate on S&S) get the number, my bet is the pilot is way off and the air fuel screw is out of adjustment.

Pull the float bowl off and remove the intermediate and get the number, also there may be an airbleed jet in the bowl if so get the number on it as well, it can also be located on the rear facing side of the carb or none at all. depends.

The manual pdf you download will show you all the parts, screws, etc.

then post the numbers here so we know the jets.

Turn in the air mix screw gently counting the turns to bottom then back out 2.5 turns to start.

You have a tuning issue or a problem carb JMO

My experience with S&S has been that 99% of the time they are over jetted for the way most people ride. If you spend alot time in town I don't think you will ever get away from fouled plugs. I would suggest you down size with S&S and ride in a lower gear when possible. Or go to a differant brand then you can ride any way you want. Dutch
