| I have an 06 HD Ultra Classic that is completly stock and I want to change mufflers to get a better sound out of it. I am tired of it sounding like a sewing machine. I want something that is not to loud but gives that nice deep Harley sound. I don't want to P off the neighbors when I come home at midnight from work. I was hoping that someone could give me some ideas on what they are using that gives the sound I am looking for and how they affect performence and if I change mufflers are there any other mods I will have to make.
Thank You In Advance |

| because of epa regs,,,the bike is set up to run on the lean side from the moco. changing the pipes only with no mods to the intake side of the engine will make it run even leaner, leading to a dangerous condition to the internals of the engine....burnt pistons, cylinderwalls,valves.....this being said, when you try to make and engine breath better and sound better you need to fix both intake and exhaust. when you find an exhaust that you like, you will also need to increase fuel flow. on a carb you must rejet and adjust and also increase the airflow into the engine, usually with a stage one kit from either a stealer or aftermarket dealer. i you have efi, then a map and a stage one kit is in order.hope this helps, and i am sure there will be a plethera of other answers for you....have fun |

| Hey Sparky, if you are just looking for that "Harley" sound then you might just want to go with slip-on mufflers. Your 06 Ultra is EFI so you'll want to get your map updated by the dealer or qualified shop. If you are confident with DIY then add on a Power Commander and load your own maps. Both Screamin Eagle and V&H ovals make nice sounding mufflers. |

| Hi Sparky,
I have an 06 Ultra Standard, replaced the original mufflers with harley touring mufflers, not bad but not authentic enough for me. Then bought some Vance and Hines slip on oval mufflers, and the sound is the dogs bo**ocks (no additional changes required), get your dealer to change the mufflers and let them remap if necessary.
Vance and Hines also do a set of header pipes along with oval mufflers with no balance pipe between, and one heat shield running from cylinder head to muffler (much tider), this would be my ultimate choice, but at the exspense of throwing away the system Ive got and starting again I am stuck with the original OEM header pipes.
Let me know how you get on, if you buy the complete system I would love to see it on your bike.

Thank You In Advance | Sparky,
Geeez Sparky, by default you already have the Harley Sound! I think that you just want to be noticed a little more. Ok, that's cool.
Hmmmmm, the neighbors do present a problem, don't they. s may not want to hear this but here goes any way. Hands down the best bang for your buck, performance first and sound second: Supertrapp 2 into 1 with the open tip reverse cone (the cheep one $18.95 for racing only). The dynamics of the pipe design forces most of the gases through the discs at low speed but at high speed the pipe will sound way louder due to the opening passing most of the gases through the open tip. At slow speed the pipe will only be slightly louder than what you have with its own distintive rumble, not what you would associate with HD but very close but different and quite plesent. Trust me, they will know it's a Harley comming but the sound is different. On athe other hand, wack the throttle and it will roar like a lion that just had it's A$$ branded with a harley logo, a really big Harley logo. Now for the bad news, you need to tune the pipe, there are lots of folks including the manufacturer that will help you. There is more good news, your power band will be lowered 300 to 400 RPMs lower (improved off the line performance). You should get a good Air cleaner and tune the bike first (SE Air Cleaner Kit and a download or SERT [if you get the performance desease]). Once your bike is running correctlywith the new air cleaner, change the exhaust to the Supertrapp (Important: save everything incase the EPA gets you and you need to pass a Smog test). Now the tuning (of the pipe ) starts. Instructions will come with the pipe and you can read a really good explanation about it from a former tech a Supertrapp on the V-twin forum.
Now you will have a really good sounding bike that will not drivew you or your neighbors nuts and when you want to get into a pissing pipes contest (noise) with someone you can. Oh yes did I mention that you will have a Stage I with hp and torque that will only be matched with an other just like it?
Best wishes,
Pixs
ps. see V-twin forum post by springer for information you need to know about SERT. If you don't understand EFI see http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/ first. Chrome up, Rubber down

| Pixs you are right I got the Harley but I think they got the sound from Singer Sewing Machines. Hmmmmmm 2 in to 1. Never thought about that but how would that look on an Ultra?
Bob I almost went with the Harley tourers and now after hearing what you had to say I am glad I didn't. That's why I came here to find out what from you all the good and the bad.
You all gave me some good ideas so now I have to sit down and decide which way to go. It's colder then a witches booby here right now so I got a little time to decide. Then I can get what I need and have my dealer do what ever it takes. I don't want it done half a$$. It will cost me a little more for them to do it but at least if they screw it up they I can go back on them to fix it.
Well you all ride safe out there and thanks for all your help.

NEVER RIDE FASTER THAN YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL CAN FLY | If the second letter is L I have no interest so I don't know what flavor of Geezer Glide you have. I did see one in the Steelers with a Thunder Header in Black Ceramic though, It looked great but a bit on the noisy side. |
