What's the best thing to clean aluminum wheels on my 06 Fatboy?

I have been thinking about cleaning mine with a can of flat black......just a thought!!! mine need MUCH attention.....they are looking sad..but most people are not going to look at the wheels on a bagger, AND, I don't have time to keep those clean...I am lucky to keep the rest of the bike sorta clean...

i have found that simple green, diluted and sprayed out of a spray bottle works the best on brake dust, and road grime. i have replaced my rear pads with lyndal (sp) brake pads and the dust is no more. also better brakeing in all conditions....gonna put a set on the front then i will have no brake dust. hope this helps a bit

Both EagleOne and Mothers makes good cleaners specific to aluminum wheels. Even though brake dust is baked in, resist the desire to use harsh cleansers. Diluted simple green is about as harsh as I'd go.

I second chucks recommendation of using Lyndal brakes. I installed the LRB Z-brakes and they are the best I've ever used. I just wish they made pads that good for my truck.

go to yer local choke and puke trucker rejuvination clinc( truck stop) and there should be an array of liquid polishing prouducts depending on the clean or shine you desire

Simple green is alright if you just want to achieve a polish on an un-blemed wheel, but if you want to remove oxidation and bring the original shine back out of an otherwise dull wheel, go with mother's or eagle one wadding.

CNC Like they said , find a 18 wheller chome shop , They carry a few good cleaner's for alum , About $20 for a small bottle , but if used right right will last about a year , also get the samll mother's polishing ball about $15 bucks , I put mine on the jack sat on a creat & poped a brew & went to work about 3 pop top's later ( I drink slow) both wheels look real good on my 03 E glide

Mothers Power ball (small with extension) from an autoparts store and the Mothers aluminum polish is the thing.

Just did a full aluminum wheel, it was amazing the difference.

Also get some of the chrome polish for mothers (both in liquid form)
and do the bike and you will be amazed how nice the chrome on you bike will look.

A sandblaster.....

I use simple green also....on my old bike I went down to my local ACE hardware which has everything that has been banned for the last 30 years & got a metal cleaner... took off all that brake dust grime, & crud real good....Nearly melted my tires off too. Now I try to stick with the bio-degradeable stuff & put a little more work into it....

Go to one of the specilty chemical shops that sells industrial soaps etc to car washes, what works best is a citric acid based cleanser (very mild) mixed properly. You ever see one of those used hubcap stores and marvel at how they get those old used hubcaps to look like new or even better than new thats how.

Thats not far from the truth....I noticed like a run in the tire where the chemical was coming off the rim.....so I rinsed it off & the tire looked like it had a cleft like the one between your nose & lip on it. I nearly crapped my pants...I just replaced the tire not too long before that too...Needless to say, Im more careful with what I use on my bike now.

chucktx, where did you find your lyndall brake pad's ? I called all over here local & no luck, looked on the web & found them from $40 to $46 buck's

i got them from an indy shop up near livingston...."down south cycle" and i think i paid 38 out the door.....i would think jj could order em for ya...

Thank's , I almost forget about JJ , every ony else said they could order them but at the $46 , price plus the shipping , I just ordered mine from hammer custom cycle out in AZ , for $40 + $4.25 for shipping , I 'am just looking to get read of all the dust & some fading for My E glide , it get's to be a bitch to clean those factory mag's , , I looked lyndall up after I seen you post about putting them on , I they say about 18k miles for them , sure beet's the 6-8k I get from the outher's I've tried , so I looked at it & thought about every tire change , do the brares at the same time instead on twice as many brake pad's

are you getting 18k out of your tires???? i am luck to get 8/9k out of my rear, but i do have nearly 20k on the front. i dont "hotrod" my eglide standard, but i do a lot of 2 up and neither one of us are little. i check air pressure,and shock pressure couple times a week. i run the dunops. they handle really well for me, just the milage sucks..

Chucktx, I don't run those low milage Dunlap's , I only got 6-7k out of the rear ones , & about 20k from the front , I went to the metzler , both front & rear , the rear one I just change out had a little over 15k on it , a lot of riding no burnout's , I'am only about 180 lb's & the wife is about the same , E glide standard cop bike , added a after market tour pack & keep a bit of crap stuff in the bag's , I check the tires about once A month & shock's at the same time metzler front 33 lb's met rear 44 lb's & about 20 in the shock's
