Speedometer question

My harley has no speedometer. Its a 1984 custom sportster with a wideglide front end. I have looked through my books and can not figure out if the speedometer attach's to the front end or if it goes to the transmission. Im new to the biker world as you can probably tell, but i assume it probably attach's to front end (off the front fork). what could i look for to be able to know for sure. I have no idea what year the front end of this bike is. Thanks for any help.

That speedo should be front wheel driven.
