I put my '88 FXRP in the shop because it had a bad clunk and was shifting real hard when I changed gears. The shop put a new primary chain and drive sprocket, a new drive belt and a new pully on the transmission for the drive belt. When I got it out of the shop it was shifting pretty smooth and making a click when it went in gear. After driving it about 70 miles it is back to making a loud clunk again when it goes into gear. Please help!!

First I'd take it back to the shop and say WTF!?!? I'm sure all that work wasn't cheap! If it's a decent shop they should have figured out what the original problem was, unless they changed a whole bunch of sh*t for no reason just to bump the bill. (sounds like you and I have the same stamp on our foreheads that says "please screw me".....) Anyway, to me it sounds like it's more in the trans, not the primary drive. Maybe your clutch isn't engaging all the way or something like that. Sorry, that's about all I can offer. I'm sure someone else has a better idea to offer up.

you're not dealing with a steelership are you i have an 06 that gets to doing the same thing. my shop just adjusts the clutch and its fine for quite awhile til it needs adjusted again. but don't listen to me i don't even have a manual yet

ernie....it could be a couple of things.....the clutch cable could be streching...and needing replaced, the primary chain adjuster could have slipped. i would take it back and get them to check their work to be sure something hasnt come loose.....let us know what ya come upwith.....

I like the rest would take it right back to the shop & have the double check there work at there cost meaning they eat this time because they should have found it the first time around
