with all the ideas going on here , is why I first suggested the screwdriver trick it will help pin-point the area better ,if it a rod sound it could be one of many reason's for it , but in a latter post you say they bored it to 30 over , it could ba a piston not right in some form or another , or just a wrist pin to tight

Check the cam bearing after all else fails. Valve slap drove me crazy on a '68. Thump '63
