Should just be a splined shaft sticking out of the tranny,

I would go to a bike shop and get me a chrome slip over cap, fill it with clear silicone and cover the shaft.

sarge this is a very easy job....dont know why you want to do it tho. it is a square shaft with a slot cut for the kicker arm, you will need to remove the bolt completly to remove the kicker arm. there should be no leaks. the kicker return spring may have a cover over it. the cover will have a screw holding it in place. let us know how it comes out.....

I have a service manual and a parts manual, but the kickstart is out of my mind for now.Went on a short ride today, 40-50 miles, about 10 minutes into the run, my scoot started missing. Was on some backroads to avoid traffic and was nearing the end of the run when the bike started stalling and backfiring real bad. Got it home with a struggle and found that within 2 days new plugs had fouled badly. Had just put a new Bendix on it and started readjusting the idle and mixture acc.2 the SM when the starter decided to work when it wanted to. Took the solenoid off and the primary cover and everything seems to be in place. Oh yea last thing to get my goat was the solenoid stuck open. Going to the local shop tomorrow to see if the wrench has any ideas to help me get back motoring.

no problem gettin' hijacked by the avatar. I am going to keep the kickstart. For whatever reason the starter button is not working but the kickstart works on the first kick silly me for cursing the kickstart
I can start by running a jumper from the battery pos. to the trigger button on the solenoid and it statrs great. Any ideas why

check the starter relay....not sure where it is on your bike, but it is a small black box with 4 terminals on it. one will come from the starter button, one from the starter soloinoid, one from a ground and one from a battery source....or the start button may make the ground circuit. this item is availabe at auto parts stores very cheap...few bucks, they are also prone to terminal breakage and corrosion........hope this helps.......
