OK many of us have talked about running drag pipes without baffles because we want the bike loud. Yeah I've done it, we all have, sounds cool, unless you're the guy riding next to you getting your ears blown out.

Theres been some chatter about the problem loud pipes are going to get HD riders into, recent Denver ordaninces restrict you to stock mufflers only. You can't buy a replacement from anyone regardless of it's Db level. This of course will get defeated in court, but the point is , cities are taking the issue to task.

It first started in the off road sector, 2 strokes became 4 strokes, 4 strokes got better mufflers, then gas leaf blowers, it's changed that market, manuf have had to deal with making them quiet or get banned.

So when you think about pulling the baffles to put it to the man, well consider this, while you're enjoying the loud ride you may very well be putting it to yourself and everyone else that rides.

I'd rather have LEO chasing down perps that need it, vs writing tickets to bikers for loud pipes, so keep them baffled, they can be louder than stock just don't make them so friggin loud people hate to see or hear us coming, once people stop thinking motorcycles are kool they become a problem.

Because there is always some zealot out there with a ton of money and supporters that will form a group to support the cause and pound on a city councilman until they give.

i think we all know when we have bikes with loud pipes, we do have a certain ablitiy to control the noise. nobody cares how loud they are if they don't hear them. so. . . we all just need to think about where and when (what time it is) when we twist. when it comes to loud pipes 98% of us really don't cause the problem, it's that two % who just don't think ahead or care what problems they cause the other 98%

I have loud pipes... the baffles are in, but the V&H slipon straightshots are still loud. I don't get any hastle. The problem is the people who feel the need to constantly revve the bike while at a traffic light... this is what annoys people. And I can't blame them.

On the other hand, people need to get a fu*kin life. They complain about noise?! How about dealing with the punk jackasses that go around with stereo systems that are worth more than their cars... with the damned bass pumping and the vulgar music blaring. Or how about the racing cars with the cheese slicers on the trunk... the ones that are screeching tires and are flying around like they are in the Fast & the Furious! What about road ragers with their horns blaring all the time?!

I am getting tired of this bullsh*t... maybe its about time that we take a stand. For those who are revving at traffic lights or for no real purpose... STOP IT. Grow up! Otherwise, keep the pipes the way they are. Maybe its time that we allow this to go to the lawmakers and then start fighting, so that we can get this dumped once and for all!

ya know skull, it may be that most of the people in power have a big chip on there shoulder....and they are out to get whom ever, where ever they can....misery love company. ya got your tree huggers, owl lovers, the list goes on.......i believe there are folks out there that just want to see how far they can push.....they want to tell us how to live, eat, drink, and relax. if we aint doin it there way, they will try to make us . another reason i live so far back in the woods i dont get mail......hell the "grand ol' opry" dont make it to my place untill tuesday afternoon!!!!!

I agree with Skull. It is the small percentage that go overboard ruin it for everyone else.

Just like my neighbor with the $700 Honda with the $4,000 stereo. And the worst of it is I never hear any music come out of it only thump, thump, thump, thump, etc. It rattles the pictures in my house.

You have to think that his stereo and open pipes are just a way of yelling “F- You” to everyone.

Just like Bin Laden and the Taliban, people like Al Gore and Rush Limbaugh, anything that is extreme just doesn’t work because it goes against the masses or what is considered “reasonable” by most.

So the question is... is it the lawyers that are the problem or the extreme few that are the problem ??

I got ticketed for "non-stock exhaust" in New York five years ago. It was at Americade, where they do their best to keep Harley riders away. I've become good at keeping it quiet when I'm worried that someone is paying attention. I have baffles, but they're still a bit louder than stock. I try to be considerate and roll my bike out into the street before I start it on those early weekend mornings when I'm leaving the apartment house at 6:00am to teach a class. Nobody's complained yet, at least not to me. Of course I leave the house every Thursday morning with a shotgun, so maybe they're scared.

I like a healthy sounding Harley as much as the next guy but as others have pointed out, there's a time and place. There's no place for a hard acceleration from a residential stop with the throttle hard open just to get to speed in micro seconds. The resulting straight pipe or loud pipes rattle the houses in the area. Then we wonder why the people have a attitude towards loud bikes. Just use some common sense, go easy on the throttle in the areas that count. Revving at the lights etc. Just today in the paper there was an article regarding the cities throughout the U.S. where legislation is being proposed due to the inconsideration of the few bikers that think they can be obnoxious. If we don't take it on our own to turn this around, we'll all be riding bikes that sound like sewing machines.

I don't care about the loud bass guys, the fast cars making noises or the horns, they'll get theirs. I just want my hobby of riding bikes to remain intact without big brother telling me to muffle the bike to hell and gone. My .02cts

I have loud pipes on my bike too. I have the S/E double barrel ones with BCT baffles. It's loud as hell when you crank it up, but I've never been pulled over or ticketed for it......I also don't ride like a retard either. I have ridden next to cops, past cops, and even with cops, and nobody's ever said a word about them. I think it comes down to common courtesy, something this country is severely lacking lately. If you don't ride like an a**hole with your pipes, you won't piss anybody off. JMHO of course. (Just like the ricers in their thumper mobiles)

Might be the young riders doin' that. I was coming thru the Cumberland Gap tunnel from Tn to Ky last Sunday and a young guy on a Honda of some sort passed me. Inside the tunnel, he would twist the throttle each time he got close to a car, did this about ten times in a one mile stretch. No other purpose than to show off. Mine is not real loud at idle but when I get on the wick ya know I'm comin'.

I've always told my son to be very respectful to cops if he gets pulled over. Last year he found himself in a bad situation (thanks to some punk he gave a ride to) and was on his knees on the center line with three cops, guns drawn, etc. A few days later, when he finally realized he needed my help and would have to tell me (he needed to get his car back so he wouldn't have to keep asking coworkers for rides), we went the to the police station and spoke with the cop that arrested him. After a discussion the cop said that my son had acted outstandingly considering the circumstances and he would support any deal the prosecutor wanted to make.

The lawyer told me that was the best advice I could have given my son, and I felt like a bad mother wondering why it would occur to me to even give him that advice. He ended up with a fine but no criminal conviction and learned a few good lessons - especially not to mouth off at times like that.

easy to get in with the bad ones when young, those punks have a lure to them; like damn satan does. good he has a mother thats on the ball and truely cares about him. he learned the hard way. thats why bad boys end up being great men, cause they had a good mother.
