I received an email recently asking how to calibrate a new speedometer's digital odometer reading. The guy bought a new speedo for his softail after accidentally cracking the face. He was asking how to calibrate the odometer so it had the same or similar reading as his broken one (60,000 + miles).

Any suggestions for this guy? I know there are speedo shops around but I couldn't locate any DIY methods for him.

i am suprised he got one without it being set for him. dealers need to know the milage before ordering.....fed law.
i have looked for 2 years to find someone to be able to open mine so i can change the light color.....ihate that yellow light.....if somebody finds an answer, i hope it gets posted.......

Did he get it on ebay?

Odd that he got one non calibrated.

HD does it at the factory before shipping

I would imagine you could setup some type of electronic signal device to send a signal to the odometer to increase it.

Yeah I think he got it off ebay since it had only a couple hundred miles on it.

I too had that same thought of some sort of electronic signal that would simulate it being driven, but I wouldn't want to suggest to him something that blows its circuitry. I think the sensor simply picks up on the rotation within the trans, so maybe he could mount something on a drill motor and use the sensor to read that.

Then again, he could just pass it around to a few of us, we could put some serious miles on it for him

Ken that can be done, I saw a guy do it on a bike he needed to bump mileage for just like you said, problem was the motor he used to run the speedo would only read 100 MPH, so if you need to add 60K, that would take hmm 600 hours or 25 full days of it running at that speed.
