getting ready to do some elect. work. is there a good web site to get the tools to do the pins in those connectors. i think the steeler has the pins but does'nt do the tools

If you are extending the wires in your bars you won't have to crimp on new pins just cut and solder extension wires. The pins will come out of the connectors with the aid of a little screw driver. The size of ones used on eye glasses. These can be got at Radioshack too. and then just snap them back into the connectors.

Again, follow the color codes in the manual.

The plugs on bike prior to 2007 are fairly easy to get the pins out. A small dental pick, safety pin or very small screwdriver will release the catch. The service manual lists all of the plugs, their manufacturer, and how to release the pins. Once now the manufacturer, you can get pin removal tools from most good electronics stores or Grainger Supply.

leave the pins in and cut the wires. then solider in the extensions. make sure to heat shrink each connection. The local hd dealer will have the correct wire and colors which is important. You can also get aftermarket extension sets. Dennis Kirk is good for that kind of stuff and pin pushers etc.
call them and they will send you a free catalog.

Oh it does get better.Wait till you get them back together. The pins are easily damaged when youing the pick to get them out and you now will get loose connections and intermittant problems. Trust me I have been there. That is why I say Screw the pins unless its your only option.

You're talking a bout a deutsch connection, each one is a bit different

The pins are held in by a small plastic pressure tang, take a flat blade screw driver for eyeglasses (or just a really small flat blade) and lift the tang, the pull out the connector, if you have resistance you don't have the tang up and out of the way, they will slide right out when properly done.

Putting new ends on is a chore without the proper tool, but it can be done with a set of needle nose plyers to wrap them on the end, problem is they are pricey so you don't want to practice a lot.

If you are lengthing a wire set simply cut them in the center leaving the ends on, and stagger the cuts on each wire, that way you won't end up with a huge area of splices together that will bow out and make it impossible to run through the bars.

It also helps to do it that way because all the wire tips retain the original wire color for reassembly.

You can use black for all the splices regardless of the color, just be sure to put the correct tip back on the wire.

the grease is die electric grease, make sure it's what you use or any other will conduct elect. to other circuts or to ground. as for the deutsch connectors they sell the removal tools at places like cat, napa, carquest etc. the ones I use for the pins are plastic and cost about a buck apiece they slip around the wire on the and slide down into the connector around the pin compressing the tangs allowing for easy removal and if you do screw one up they also sell a cheap crimper for them about 20 bucks that will work in a pinch, the high end one is about 300 bucks but as said time and needle nose will get you by. also if you do replace the pin connector it is a 2 part crimp one part is on the insulation/wire and the other part is on the bare wire only.

yeah, eye site and patience.

I brought my apes and both button assemblies with wires and soldering tools into the kitchen and laid it all out on the table and took my time.

Think about it first to make sure you are cutting and adding the right length and stuff.
