HELP - remove starter from a 1981 shovelhead 1340cc

Anybody have an idea how ot remove a starter from a 1981 FLHE Harley Davidson Heritage Shovelhaed. Its got a big 1340cc engine. I cant find the 2nd bolt that holds the starter case in. Do I have to remove the housing and the starter together? Anybody have a diagram I can look at or some photos?

Help me please. I just bought this bad boy. I got a new starter and solinoid. The problem I am having is it cranks the motor then the starter just spins, the winnnnnggggggg sound and of course the engine does not crank over.

Does anyone think it could just be the solinoid and not the starter itself?

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the bike: 1981 Heritage

typically there are two bolts on the starter, disconnect the ground from the battery and disconnect the power to the starter cable,

Two allens hold in the starter, remove them one on the front and rear of the starter mount plate

You will have to remove the primary cover find the starter jackshaft the small gear above the clutch basket, hold it with a pair of vice grips lightly so it won't turn and remove the end screw, you may have to bend back a locking tab so be careful and don' break the locking tab or it's a trip to the dealer.

This is a long screw 3 to 4 inches you can let it sit there same for the jackshaft because it won't come off without removing the clutch basket.

Now the starters should pull out, there is a connector between the starter motor and the jackshaft, don't loose it or put it on wrong so pay attention when you remove the starter as to it's position.

This is all based on messing with Evos and tc's so it may not be exact

the service manual explains removal and install in detail. it sounds more like the bendix is not staying engaged. if the starter turns the engine, then just spins, that is most likely the bendix....and that is in the primary cover. the manual is the best tool in the box!!
