Hope this makes sense.... The bike (89 FXR EVO) has sat for a while and now when started it just pukes oil out of what I have been told is the oil pump bypass/relief valve(?) that vents the crankcase. (it is the hose that comes off of the oil pump and runs down under the bike) I have been told that the oil will settle down and want to be puked out when started, but this is so much, it just cant be right. Do these valves get stuck, anything I can do to keep the oil in the motor and not all over me, the bike, and the ground. (I did route a temporary line into oil tank and rode bike for about 30 miles and when I took the temporary line off, it still puked everywhere.) It does not seem to be over full with oil either. Any help with the right terms for these parts would be great too. Sorry, total newbie to big twins....


Sorry for the ramble, after reading a few past post, I need to point out that the rocker boxes on the very top have been drilled, tapped and are vented( not the heads where the carb mounts, but actually on top of the rocker boxes) Now my question is, do I still need to vent the crankcase via the breather line off of the oil pump or can I plug that line off and the motor will vent properly out of top of rocker boxes? I am hoping to plug off crankcase, and run vent tube lines off of rocker boxes into a catch can that I have seen in the catalogs...Maybe? Thanks!

Regarding the oil puking problem. The check valve has a ball bearing that opens one way, and is supposed to seal at the seat and stop oil from going back into the crankcase.(keep it in the tank) It is not a real good design, and the seat and the ball can get wear and flaws,and not seal well. There is a repair procedure where you take the old ball, tack it to the end of welding rod and using valve grinding paste, lap the snot out of it to fix the sealing area, clean it up good and replace the ball with a new one.

yup, what you are experiencing is "wet sumping". it happens. the easiest way to prevent this is to start and ride the bike a few miles weekly. it will keep the oil in the oil tank. the other is to rebuild the checkvalve. i have always opted for the riding....

shortfatman , both reese & chuck have the right fix it depends on how you want to fix it , just don't block off the lower tube that's the right vent for the HD EVO ,
