New to the sport, and would like to replace my stock pipes with a system that not only gives that sought out "rumble", but also can improve performance. Don't want to invest to much as I will be getting a new bike in a few years, but what should I get, Cobra, Vance & Hines? What sounds good on a budget of $300-$400? Any help is appreciated, thank you!

you may want to try attending a bikenite in your area and listen to the different type pipes.....and as stated, ebay would be a place to start checking on prices..

JMO on the metric cruisers the V&H produce the better lower deeper tone you want the cobras and others produce a very loud exhaust but it's not a pleasing tone, it's for lack of a better term a "hard" sounding exhaust. JMO

When I had Yamaha V-twins I liked the Jardine Rumblers.

Another vote here for V&H when it comes to metric. I'll also second the idea that you visit a local bike night or event to have a listen to similar motorcycles. That is the best way to actually hear what a particular pipe or muffler will sound like. Then head over to ebay and search on Yamaha exhausts. I've bought several exhausts there from both private parties and shops selling their new or scratch & dent stock there.
