front brakes squeal on my bike. have since it was new. Dealer checked them at 600 miles said there is no problem. "They don't squeal" They still squealed. The mechanic here checked them at 6000 miles said no problem with the brakes. They still squeal. I would like for them not too. I checked them and can't find a problem. Any suggestions. Thank you fireitup

I think any fix you find is gonna be temporary. I've cut the edges on brake pads and roughed them up, also used backing spray on the metal side but eventually the squeal would come back.
I find that doing some harder braking helps on mine.
There might be some aftermarket pads you can get.
I'm sure someone else will chime in.
Also, I admire your commitment to ride while it's freezing out

I installed free floating rotors, I put on the rotors you get from the stealer, they were the cheapest, and they do make a difference, on the newer bikes you don't have to buy anything extra on the pre 2000 models youhave to buy some kind of mounting kit.

will look into those options. the brake squeal is getting louder so want to take care of it myself as the dealer or mechanic couldn't . I have the factory service manual to work from. I only ride in this weather to and from work. As soon as the threat of snow is gone and roads are dry i will be back in the saddle. Hopefully next week. Without the brake squeal . fireitup

Lyndall brake pads as above. Get them from HogPro.com Tell them you're a member of VTwin Forum and they'll ship them to you for $35 each set. I put anti squeal on the backs of mine and they never squeal.

Unless you ride REALLY REALLY hard, and are willing to do the "break in/curing", I think the Z pads do not require break in..... they are good. I THINK that the gold are the ones you need to do break in and curing stuff for/to......make sure....you don't need the cure/break in ones unless racing or ride like a couple of the riders on this board do!!! I like mine!!! noticed immediate improvement

I had a very similar problem on my 1200 sporster. I was told by a 50 year mechanic/rider that the only true & complete fix is to purchase ceramic rotors. You can now buy these for HD'S & many other bikes. They are a bit more expensive, but they are lighter, run cooler, and since there's not as much kinetic energy moving forward from a lighter wheel, your bike will also stop quicker. Just Google ceramic rotors for motorcycles and I'm sure the company will come up.

I'll check out the z pads at HogPro.com. My brakes work really well. And the squeal from the front brake isn't a safety issue only that noise the squeal it makes is driving me nuts. Thank you for the advice.fireitup

A standard rotor; the disc bolts directly to the wheel hub,
free floting rotor; has a separate piece that bolts to the wheel hub and the disc is secured to the that piece with aluminum buttons that allow it to float from side to side. It doesn't float much just enough so that it doesn't drag on the brake pads, I was able to get 25,000 miles out of stock Harley pads, lots of highway riding though. I since have put on EBC pads and noticed yesterday that my rear brake is starting to squeal a little, I will be trying the Lyndall pads as soon as they come in. The EBC are organic and leave a lot of dust on the wheel.
