My 94 Springer has only 19,000 miles and I have one lifter tapping. I plan on putting a cam, lifters and adjustable pushrods in after this riding season..The question is, will this hurt my bike, should i install one lifter, or will adj pushrods solve the problem temorarily ? I don't want to put new lifters in on an old cam....

I know with cars if they sit around alot the hydrolic lifters can clog up and cause this problem. usually a good long run 200-300 mis. then change the oil this often will clear it up. but first you want to determine how bad it is. is it a light tap or is the lifter coming apart? does it effect the way the bike runs?
in answer to "can it hurt my bike" yes it could if it's anything other than just
a cloged up lifter. i hope this helps alittle. one of the more experenced guys should be able to help further

Skull nails a lot of it, though I must confess I've no clue how a '94 can have so few miles on it. But I am all for having a bike running to it's best, so I'd change both lifters and throw on the adjustable push-rods (love 'em on mine). But I can't tell from here if that is really your trouble.
Good luck!

one reason you are hearing that tapping could be due to lack of oil changes....that old of a bike, low miles, could mean lack of maintence.....i would change the oil and filter and see if it quiets out............

There is a fine screen in the oil port for the lifters that might need alook also. It is next to the check valve on the oil pump should be cleaned everytime you change oil. Some of H/D's lifters wear the axle on the roller or the roller wears but either way not something you want to wait and see. I would replace both lifters and clean the cam chest and all related parts. Dutch

I appreciate the help, as for the low miles, bought the bike from brother in law, whom bought the bike new, but rode it very little, I got it with 9,000 miles two years ago, I changed oil and filter 6 times in 10,000 miles..Lifter doesn't tap until engine is good and warmed up, that is what I don't understand ?? I have checked the screen several times, very clean, even did a 5 quart oil change and got the leftover sludge left in the engine out....
