Hi all!

Got a problem. 88 softail springer backfires at 65 to 70 mph +. Carb rebuilt. new intake, gaskets, ect. new ignition module, circuit breakers, ect. Have a new ignition switch but not installed. Does this with the lights on. does not do it with them off. All grounds are tight and look good. Some one told me the rev limiter needs to be adjusted. Do i even have one on this model. please help. tired of throwing money at this thing.

So, it works fine when the lights off but when on it backfires and you need to adjust the rev limiter? Get a 2x4 and whack that dude upside the head once or twice 'cause that doesn't make one bit of sense.
If it does it with the lights on but not off, you most likely are experiencing a voltage drop. One problem on the switch is that the contacts arc over and cause a drop in voltage. Use a volt meter to check voltage drop across all terminals.

I had a similar problem and come to find out it was just too many jalapenos in the chili causing the backfiring.
