Hello everyone, Please excuse me if this problem has been already addressed but I just joined up and have a question.
I have a 84 (evo) FXRP. Every year for the last 4 or 5 years when I take it out of storage and start it up it runs fine for about 2 minuts. After that if starts to cut in and out, not just the ingnition but every thing on the bike, lights, ingnition, backfiring ect. When I shut it off and restart it it runs fine again for about 2 minitues and that starts going on-off, on-off, about every other second. Last year after leaving me stranded on my first ride of the year I tried unpluging the Voltage reg.....It ran fine except for a dimming of the lights and I got home. I replaced the voltage regulator with a cheap crome one and it worked fine all summer.
Here is a list of the items that have been fixed:
4 years ago an stator and all related wiring.
3 years ago an ignition switch and the ingnition moduel and a voltage reg.
2 years ago a voltage regulator and a battery.
Last year a voltage regulator, a battery and the timing plate and ect.
All the parts were replaced at either the dealer or different shops. The parts were either harley parts or high dollar brand name parts. The only parts I personally replaced a voltage reg (cheap chrome aftermarket one) last year.
I have paid out tons of cash in parts, labor and towing/trailering. Any help would be greatly apprecieated.

this promlem is a bit over my head, some of the more experienced guys will likely be of greater assistence. i'v always heard you should always replace voltage regs, and stators at the same time. and never one and not the other or the old one will blow the new one, electrons have no shame they;ll blow anything

I've heard that but replaced stators without replacing VR without a problem

It depends on what is wrong.
