883 carb help needed

You guys are great on the help.

There's one last thing I noticed and I was told it did this before the dynajet kit was installed. When the bike is turned off, a gas comes out the carb overflow hose. Could this be the floats out of adjustment?

Yes, it could be the float level set too high, but it could also be something keeping the needle from closing all the way down on the seat. Or simply the needle/seat assembly needs to be replaced. Won't take long to find out. And get rid of that Dynojet kit - all it does is drop your gas mileage.

Like Chuck said before pick yourself up a Shop Manual,and a Parts Catalog too, They're worth every penny. You got the right forum when you need help with a Sporty.
Try to get in the habit of shutting off the gas when you turn off the bike.(and turn it on before you start it) That way you don't have to rely on the float valve doing it for you,or if the float valve isn't in perfect condition you won't be losing fuel. The problem prolly is like Art said, but for me old habits die hard,there was a time when if you left the gas on it would wash down your cylinders and fill the bottom end with gas and oil.

I Kind Of Believe The Problem Lies In Having Her "ex" Install Anything For Her.if You Expect Good To Excellent Performance From Installed Equipment,then Have A Reputable Mechanic Or Dealership Install The Equipment So That The Work Is Waranteed And The Problem Solving Becomes Their Responsibility. I Did Not Know There Was A Sreaming Eagle Kit For That Year Model 883.i Have Been Told There Isn't Any For My 2006 Ultra.

I Gues I Am Officially A Biker Because I Now Have A Limp. Two Freak Accidents In Four Months Has Given Me An Annoyingly Painful Keft Foot And A Total Of $18,000.00 In Damages To The Bike As Well As 6 Months Without Riding. Could Someone Be Trying To Tell Me Something?

The scuttlebutt is that H-D discontinued the SE line of air-cleaners & other engine parts due to EPA concerns. I don't know that for a fact, but I've heard it many times. A popular replacement air-cleaner is the Arlen Ness "Big Sucker".

Well, she went and retrieved the old jets and needle that came out of it. So now all the dynajet stuff is removed from the carb. The original main jet holder had a HD 175 jet stuck in it. HD didn't have a 165 jet (thats what the parts guy said) and I picked up a 160. So with all the original equipment back in the carb and 2 1/2 turns out of the screw. She fired right up idled fine.

Took it for a short run to get some breakfast this morning. No more sluggish feeling at 55 and above. That's great. But...........guess what....it started sputtering again. I grab and losened the gas cap as this was happening, no change. I coasted to a small parking lot. Hit the starter button and it fired right up. I sat there a minute with it idling and took off. I felt a little surging from there to the house, but I was babying the thing. All in all the first two miles of the trip went flawless and then it started acting up.

As far as the gas dripping out the overflow line, it quit when the factory stuff was reinstalled.

So we accomplished two things so far. The rich conidtion and gas dripping right after the motor is turned off.

2 out of 3 ain't bad ,but you want to be 3 for 3.When you loosened the cap did you go a couple of turns? I'm still thinking it could be the cap.Did you try blowing thru the cap?If there was any restriction I'd drill it. You can take the cap and drill or punch the center of the vent.You just want to put a hole in the plastic. Its on the underside of the cap and in the center of it. A little spring loaded thing thats supposed to keep fuel from leaking if the bike is upside down. Then you'll know for sure. If she's upside down with the bike a little fuel spill will not be on your priority list anyway. The way you're describing it sounds to me thats whats going on.
Maybe someone else can think of another reason why it would happen,but I can't think of any. Good Luck on curing #3.

The 160 main is a bit lean for a "tax-paid" 883 (improved intake & exhaust) but is what the bike came with & really will only affect higher rpms @ full throttle. And when the H-D dealer doesn't have the carb part or the parts guy doesn't know what you're talking about, go to a Honda/Yama/Kawa/Zuki dealer - many of their bikes use the same CV carb we do & they often have parts for less $$$ too.

Heck, I ducked into a Polaris/Victory dealership 'cause it's the closest place to get a sunvisor for my helmet & the parts counter guy told me our racing friend who runs Moto Guzzis had just been in. What? A carb part that's for a snowmobile or a jet ski carb works in a Guzzi too? Yep. A CV is a CV. Yes, there are differences depending on application, but the basic design is the same & has been for 20 years.

Check the ignition module by heating it up with a hair-dryer & see if the engine does the same thing. And all the electrical connections - the cable to the starter is a known problem & so is the ground cable.

Making progress. And I know that I'll get flamed for this, but a "motor" is a device which uses electrical power to do mechanical work - the starter on your bike is a "motor" - but the "engine" most assuredly is not.

You're right Art Motors are electric. I wonder how many people told HD their name was wrong until 1965 when they put a motor on their cycles I don't think anyone will flame ya!!

Ha !! Call me nit-picky (because I am) but a "motor" & an "engine" ain't the same thing I'm a NASCAR fan & laugh when the guys use the term "motor" - you know, when the winner is interviewed after the race - "Yeah the (insert sponsor names here) guys gave me a really good motor today" What, the one that blows cool air into your helmet? That $60,000 thingy under the hood is an "engine", son.

just to twist yer chicken a little art a motor dosen't use electrical it is powered by electricity, and water, and hydraulics (IE.oil), and air. so if were gonna split hairs then split'em the whole way

i was born and raised in new orleans,la.. i consequently have a N.O.L.A. accent which is much like a northern [N.Y.] accent. i do not know if the statement made about AX is an insult or not but it is opinionated and unnecessary. i at least get to ride year round without freezing my butt off or becoming a human sled.

Just having some fun FRXMAS, it's an NYC thing, no insult intended, you can chill now. Sorry to hear about your freak accidents. I've been downed three times in a month. Someone knocked my bike down while parked, a taxi got too close and tapped my saddlebags from the rear and I hit the ground, once was partly my fault. I replaced the derby cover with a dressy 100th Anniversary one. It leaked oil when I did it but I didn't think it was enough to matter much. Next thing I know my clutch is all whacked out. I was on my way to the NYC Harley dealer for an emergency pit stop and the bike lurched forward, really hard, I'd just picked my feet off the ground and down I went. Fortunately Harley's are tough machines. I've gotten away without too much damage, all things considered. Still, I'm a bit worse for wear, bruised and pissed about other's negligence. Wouldn't think about giving up my Sporty for a minute though. Good luck, ride safe and stay on the bike!

I Guess Some Of Us Are A Little To Sensitive, And You Ax Why!? I Have Family And "freinds" Telling Me To Trade For A Sports Car And Get Off The Bike Because The Third Accident May Be Serious,i Thought A Broken Foot And Another $ 9000.00 In Damages Was Reasonably Serious. I Guess I'll Have To Get Killed To Stop Riding.i Am However Concerned That My Seven Year Old Daughter Still Wants To Ride With Me In Spite Of "the Dog Accident". Life And All It's Decisions Can Be A Real Pain In The Buttocks Some Times. I Will Give It A Lot Of Thought When I Get My Bike Back From The Dealership All Nice And New Looking. Ditto To You And Thanks!!!

One of my best friend's broke his leg after running into gravel on the blind side of a sharp turn, but he couldn't wait to get back on the bike. I am much more careful now, but need some time to get my full confidence back. I'll try taking an advanced riding course this summer. It doesn't sound like the dog accident was your fault. I went down once when my seat came off on a turn and I went with it! You gotta give yourself a Mulligan sometimes.

frxmas, if your daughter is tall enough to set on the seat behind you and reach the foot pegs i see no problem giving her a ride. dogs or any animal on the road is something we all risk. don't let a few bads take away something you enjoy. and there isn't a much better way to bond with your kids than to share something you enjoy with them. hellboy a riders course is a good idea. it will help your confidence and teach you a few things you don't know. a course is a good idea for anyone, we can all learn a few new things, and if they make us better riders all the better.

Her Feet Reach The Saddlebags But Are No Where Near The Footpegs. She Is Quite Confident In Me And Is Relaxed On The Back In Her Compartment. She Does However Remind Me To Be Careful And Not To Go Too Fast.she Is The Epitomy Of Daddy's Girl [ By The Way I Am 64 Yrs. Old And I Have Four Grandchildren Older Than Her.] We Have A Fantastic Relationship. There Are Pros And Cons To Everything Having To Do With Riding A Motorcycle As Well As What Equipment To Put On It.to Each His Own. It Is A Very Personal Thing.
