Exhaust Question

I am riding a 04 Honda VTX 1800N and when I first got it it had the stock exhaust on it. I have had problems before with people not being able to hear me so I changed the pipes to a set of Cobra pipes with a removable baffle. They sound good with the baffles in but they sound better with the baffles out. They are alot louder which is good for me. The question that I have is that I have heard mixed reviews as far as removing the baffles concerning the backflow pressure as well as burning the valves. If need be I will place the baffles back in so that I dont have a problem with those issues, but is there something that I can do to the baffle to possible get a better sound out of it.

Cool Exhaust Question

I have a buddy that used to ride a VTX... I believe the trooper clocked him at 152 mph if I remember right... but I digress.

When you pull your baffles your exhaust flow increases and likewise the engine will pull in more air. Unless you make changes to the fuel circuit, you will likely run leaner. Too lean and you will toast pistons and valves... typically not considered a good thing. This can be worked around by remapping injected bikes or jetting a carb bike. You may pick up some power on the upper end but you sacrifice torque in the low to midrange. Unless you run wide open all the time this is not good either. For most of use we want to preserve midrange torque for cruising and you'll probably find that your better off with the baffles in. I don't keep up with rice burners but if Big City Thunder makes a Thunder Monster for your exhaust, it might be worth a try. You get the sound but still some back pressure. I have heard some good reviews but have never tried them myself. Better yet, trade for a Road King, that's what my buddy did

Exaust Question

Breeze

I have a Cobra Fi2000 on my bike to help correct the problem with the lean mixture due to the problems that I was having with backfiring when I changed the exhaust. I will check out Big City Thunder to see what they have to offer

Real simple design, but it works. Too loud for me, but if that's what you like, they'll get back lost midrange power & some of the low end. Open pipes are always bad for a street/road bike & it's not the loss of backpressure, as backpressure is always bad. What kills you is "reversion" - the pressure waves that go back up the pipes unrestricted. Really screws up tuning except in one narrow rpm range.

Cool

Skull is right. If you haven't already done so you can pick up a few ponies with a low restriction air cleaner. It sounds like you are already able to compensate for the extra air. I wrote too much as it was and didn't get into reversion but if you search the forums you will find some good discussion about what it is and how it affects performance. If you don't see anything on the Big City Thunder website about your bike, shoot them an e-mail. They can tell you if they have Thunder Monsters to fit.

keep in mind that once you open both ends you'll need more fuel to counter the leaning out effect caused by the air moving through the engine with greater ease

Breeze, website is BigCityThunder.com, they have a baffle called Thunder Monster and now have one called Thunder Monster QC (quality Quite) don't let the name QC fool you. I run the thunder monster in my low rider with V&H big radius, I run the QC in my road king wih V&H big shot true duals and they are not quit, but not as loud as the thunder monsters, they really help with low to mid range the dyno has proved it. i'm sold on them and so are several that i ride with. By the way go BIG ORANGE !!!!!

Cool Exhaust Question

I'm pretty familiar with Thunder Monster just don't know if they can match Diamond_Doggs Cobra pipes. His ride is a Honda VTX and once you get away from Harley you might as well speak Russian to me. I do know that BCT can't fit every pipe and they can tell you pretty quick if it is go or no go.
