Hi gang,
My girlfriends' Dyna did not pass NH inspection because it blew higher than 107 decibels... she's got SuperTrapp Mean Mothers on it.

Since I put them on it's my problem, so, I figure I can either put the OEM exhaust on or put baffles in it.

I figure this is going to be a yearly ritual and might be easier to get a set of quieter baffles.

Problem is I can only find replacement baffles for the originals from SuperTrapp.

My question: is there a way to modify the baffles to make 'em quieter, or are replacement baffles standard across manufacturers?

I think you have a few options. I had baffles put in my drag pipes and they work fine, they can be cut down to give you as much volume reduction as you need. Some here have used the "lolipop" fix. I don't know exactly how it's done, but someone here will most likely give you more details.

supertrapps are a bit different than normal exhausts.......the fewer Plates you have in the muffler, the quieter it gets.....so, all ya need to do for inspections is remove some plates to get it quieter........hope this helps!!!

Thanks guys... I knew I could find my answer here! 'Will let you know how that turns out. I guess that extra literature they sent with the pipes might have mentioned the tuning discs! My bad!

Is that something new they started doing this year? Or do you live in the part of NH that's really Massachusetts without all the taxes?

'Not sure Abby... I don't think they even started them up last year. This was at a dealership and it was during an event, so the place was real crowded.
I'm thinking maybe because it was crowded they were concerned about who might be watching them.
Now that I've googled Chucks' answer about removable discs I think this will be a breeze.

As of yet they haven't held up the inspection sticker because of loud pipes however there may be a few in the area of the Lakes Region that are now starting too. I know there has been the usual outcry over loud pipes in Laconia and the surrounding areas.

Sorry you can't do squat with the disks on the mean mothers they dont' have disks. Basically they are lones of the V&H long/stagger/big/short shots.

You can reduce the sound by making sure the baffles are completely wrapped with fiberglass muffler insulation, you can get it at any indy shop or muffler shop.

The lolly pop is basically a washer welded to the tip of a threaded rod,
thread it through the hole in the baffle for the retaining screw, nut it on the outside and inside, adjust so it blocks off the exit, this has the effect of helping the bottom end power curve and may reduce sound.

Or just slip the stockers on, get it certified, ride it home and change back, how are they going to know?

Thanks HRK... I haven't been able to tear into it yet... I'm beginning to think putting the old pipes back on is going to be the easiest. It was a pretty easy swap to begin with... We might try the indy down the road first and see what happens there.
If i have to swap her pipes this Saturday I figure it's good bargaining chips for future leverage

I think and don't take my word for that your mean mothers take a 2" baffle. There are some generic baffles out there you might want to give a try to get you through inspection and they will cost less than the originals from Supertrapp ($51.00 on Supertrapp website). The lolipop fix may knock your sound down a little but I have doubts about meeting your local standards whatever that might be. Around here LEO just pokes a nightstick up the exhaust and if it hits bottom assumes you have a baffled exhaust I can't tell you exactly where to look but I know I have seen generic exhaust parts... maybe Dennis Kirk or JC Whitney.

I would just find an indy shop that gives stickers. They are usually a lot more slack than the dealer, at least for people who buy from them. The guy I go to in MA doesn't even look at the bike. He simply slaps the sticker on there and away you go. My bike would never get a sticker the way it is right now at the Dealer.

So far in TN we only have emission testing for cagers. Scooters may come down the road. It is all done by a contractor with the state and as far as I know they don't cut any slack. If NH works the same deal for their inspection program you may be back to square one. Good luck!

Hey Breeze, They tried to bring emissions testing up here also, sounds like the same deal that you have there in TN. In fact they used to have it in the 80's in the county I live in exclusively because it lies in a valley. Thankfully the right people must have gotten involved and canned it altogether.

Breeze,Where do u live in TN? We do not have emissions test for anything here in Knoxville or noise.

I'm in Sumner County which adjoins Davidson. Davidson (Nashville) and all adjoining counties have had emission testing for about 20 years now. I think the same may be true for Memphis area. So far doesn't apply to scooters but there has been talk.
