A buddie is thinking about switching his 1999 EFI cop bike to carb. Is there more to it than changing the manifold and cables and installing the carb and enricher??
What about the ECM?? Does that have to be changed too??

i would guess that the ecm would have to be changed or altered in some why. i'm thinking of those wires going to the ecm associated with the senors and of course the injectors related to EFI. sounds like it would be easier in the long run to learn to work and problem shoot EFI. also you have the epa end of it to consider; sooner or later. thought a while back this question came up on the forum, seems somthing to do with zippers. good luck

I've been very close to doing this on my 98. I know they make gas tank line adapters so you don't have to do any welding to the tank. As far as what I see in my manual I can do away with my ECM , but I would have to buy a wiring harness and an ignition module. I think I can still use the hall affect switch on the nose cone as the trigger for the ignition module. The only thing that is a little confusing to me is how the VOES works.

The pros to this would be to simplify the whole engine operation.
The cons to this would be less altitude adjustment and having to use a choke.

I am not having that much trouble with the FI to force me to do this yet. I have heard that some bikes really run like crap so they have no choice but to change over to carb.

You can do it but it with fuel injection you get the best of both worlds, I would rather spend the money on swithching to delphi injection than going back to a carb, found this on headquarters site, Todd

I got a little education on EFI last night over a couple of cases of beer. It's not a simple swap. The MM injector system is what is on the Evo fuelies and earlier twinkies and switched to the Delphi system, not sure when but my '03 I'm going for today has the Delphi system. Is that correct? What I've been reading there are a lot of advantages with EFI and I've just seen the inside of a TC in the last couple of weeks so I think I'll be happy with my new bike.
My buddy said after the 10th cold one or so that I MAY be able to get away with changing mufflers only(leave stock air cleaner) without remapping. I'm not modifying anything on this bike but I like a deep rumble(not obnoxious loud) from my bikes and I'm gonna try to leave it alone as long as I can. I see there are self adjusting kits coming out for EFI, (like havin a wrench in a brainbox) Zippers looks impressive, so when the newness wears off I'll be a little more educated on TC EFI bikes.
Anyway enuf of the rant....pumped about getting a new 5 yr old machine.

So a switch from the MM to Delphi would be a worthwhile upgrade for the '99 fuelie, I don't know if he was having problems with it or not just thinking about taking a step backwards is what it seems it would be..
I could take your list to the dealer here and start a pool on how many wrong parts came A list of 3 is tough on them.

On a 99 a you could switch to Delphi but if the bike was running alright I dont know if I would mess with it, If it has some runability problems then a switch would make sense as I wouldnt spend much time or money on a MM fuel system If your buddy wants to put on a Thundermax with auto tune then I think a switch would almost me mandatory, I just got done puttting the Zippers Thundermax (self tuner) on my bike a couple of hours ago, The throttle response is great and it seems like it runs smoother at idle. I only have about 50 miles on it so it is a little early to tell. On your 03 bike it already has Delphi, 2002 was the first year for that. Your buddy is correct you can just put pipes on and that will be fine unless you put an aircleaner kit on also, then you would need some sort of fuel management system. I think you will be very happy with a fuel injected bike, they are more expensive if you want to start doing a lot of mods to your bike but withe the beauty of a fuel injection system you can tune for power in all rpm bands except for your cruising areas and you get power and economy you dont have to decide like you would on a carb, basically you can have your cake and eat it too. I am going to run the Thundermax without altering the maps for a few weeks and let the self tuning do its job before I start leaning down the cruise areas for better fuel efficiency and to get a little more familiar with the software, I have had this thing for 4 months and have always been a little intimdated by it but I finally got the balls to put it on and try it out, I figured this way if I had some problems I could get Zippers to help me at Sturgis this year.
