I'm sure this question has been answered before. I have asked so many people and gotten so many different answers, I'm looking for some good advice here. I bought my girlfriend an 04 Softail Standard and she is itching to put pipes, stage one kit and new air cleaner on it. She just went over 1,000 miles. I thought she should wait a while longer. I waited for 5,000 miles before I put new pipes and upgrades on my nightrain, based off of a mechanic's suggestion. But I've seen guys put them on before the bike even left the dealership for the first time. So what is the "correct" mileage for break-in before you put the pipes, etc. on a new bike?

You can do it the day you buy it, no reason to wait, used to be people waited because of warranty concerns but your warranty cannot be voided because of new pipes and filter.

The stage 1 hop up is the best bang for the buck, drag pipes will sound cool but kill power just FYI a set of slip ons will provide more power and sound

Cycle Shack, Khrome Werks. Vance and Hines staggered pipes with the baffles in will work fine if you want to do the whole exhaust.

The Ness big sucker or HD SE filter kit is good for the intake, just get the carb dialed in as you'll be leaner as soon as you do this and you'll need to richen the carb a bit, probably a twist of the air mix screw and maybe a larger pilot jet.

What about the break-in period for the engine?

Cool

Now keep in mind, I'm a nurse, not a mechanic!! Break in period is for the engine/pistons and such as far as I know. Actually the way I look at it, you may actually do your bike a favor by doing the filter, exhaust and rejet/re-map and will actually cool the engine temp by giving more gas to the factory set LEAN mixture. The key to break in is the RMPs that you ride at.....allows the moving parts to "form to each other" kinda like soaking leather combat boots, then wearing them till dry while doing your routine activity....."custom fit". Same concept (I think) as to why in the military they say never use mulitpal bolts for an M-16......always the same bolt/receiver combo. Good luck! I did my change as I could afford it, have all changes made and HOPEFULLY will go over 2500 miles this weekend!!
