hello all,

1990 ultraclassic, new spkye starter. all is well but it just clicks when i press the start button. CD wrote a fix for this and i have called myself doing a forum search for it. if anyone knows the thread i am refering to would you please post it for me. it was about putting another relay in the starter circuit somehow. i just dont remember the full sequence of operation.

hey chuck,

that isn't the thread i have been looking for. the thread told of getting another relay and some how wireing it so the starter gets more amps for cranking. my starter justs clicks when i press the button. i have a starter button on the starter which i press manually to start my bike. but, thanks for the reply.

paco, the starter motor should have a direct wire to the battery,,,,i dont know how it can get more than that. if it starts with the button on the starter, i think your problem is between the relay/solonoid............

Might just be a bad wire or switch , if the button you put on the starter works look at the above mentioned My son went through this was hard to find butit was the contact in the handle bar switch good luck

You're talking about the relay trick that we used for years. It basically allows for full batt voltage to the solenoid. FL's have a long history of starting problems because the wiring loom is so long. Batt voltage drops off and over time connections start to break down and the resistance goes up dropping voltage even more. After awhile the starter relay has to much voltage drop and cannot keep the contacts closed. The fix is really simple and we used it a bunch. You add a relay that is triggered by the original relay.

You can get a new relay at your shop or any parts store it is a 30 / 40 amp normally open relay with 5 spade connections and has the wiring diagram moulded into it. Find a place to mount it near the original relay.

Once mounted, make a red wire that runs from the 30 amp breaker to the n/o contact side of the relay.

Next take the wire that goes from the stock relay to the solenoid and move it to the other side of the n/o contacts.

Make a ground wire that goes from the ground side of the new relay to chassis ground.

Next, make a wire to go from the old relay to the new relay. It will replace the wire you removed on the old relay and will go to the coil side of the new relay (opposite the new ground wire). This will provide the current to close the new relay.

What you are doing is adding a relay that provides full batt voltage directly to the solenoid using the original relay to activate the new one.

Here is a link that will allow you to see the connections. It is the old Crane igntion boost relay but it is the same as the starter relay... and fog lamps on cars for that matter.

Most of the time the numbers on the relays are the same so what you are doing is:

On the new relay you make a wire that goes from the 30 amp breaker to post #87.
You move the wire from post #30 of the old relay to post #30 of the new relay.
You make a wire that runs from post #30 on the old relay to post #86 on the new relay.
You make a ground wire that runs from the chassis to post #85 on the new relay.

now i understand what he was looking for.......those relays are the cats meow!!!!!!! they are small and compact and do a great job.... they do come in different amps tho.....so check the one you get. automotive a/c use them also......

relay fix works like a charm. now i don't have to press the aux button on the starter itself. got to be a mother when in the mountains or a slope to hold the bike , keep it from rolling backwards, somehow hold the brake and then press the button down on the starter. sorta like stopping on a hill at a light on an old pan with foot clutch, jocky shift , 8' springer and no front brakes with a big a$$ b*t*h on back.

We did that on Dougs 113 and along with an All Balls Starter and new ring gear it's made the bike easy to start.
