I have an '07 FLHT with an little over 13,000 miles on it. After about the first 2000 miles I opened it up one night just to see what she would do. I was disappointed to say the least. The bike hit 100mph and wouldn't go any faster. Later, I put a stage 1 kit on it, had the dealer re-tune it, and still can't get over 100mph. I talked to Harley Customer Service and they told me that there is a speed limiter on the bike and that no Harley service tech can change it. Something about a liability issue.
My question it, what can I do to get rid of this speed limiter? Friends have told me that I have to buy an aftermarket ECM. I don't have that kind of money. Some say an aftermarket tuner will do the trick, while others tell me that a tuner won't eliminate the speed limiter. Hopefully someone can give me the low-down before I start spending any money.

i knew that the newer bikes had a rev limiter on them, didnt know about the speed limiter. anyway, if the bike is programed with a speed limiter, and harley has a liability issue about changing it, you will need to bite the bullet and go with an after market tuner..............

I have an 07 Fatboy and I used the Harley race tuner. I had an induvidual tuner/dyno shop tune my bike and he could alter pretty much any settings the factory installed. My complete mapping, rev limiter, fuel curve and timing has been altered..The dealer cannot change factory settings or won't due to liability issues..

A Buddy of mine called me last night & we got to talkin bikes & he said his 06 Dyna was the same way 100 & that was it I know he did pipes & AC ,I think he's has a carb so told him we could order a kit & redo his But if he EFI we'll have to get a pc111& go that way , like spy stuff you have to brake the code

pciii offers a down load cd for about 40.00 which adds extra fuel at startup plus it raises the rpms

I've not seen anyplace you can raise the speedo cutoff in a race tuner, it wouldn't matter if you raised the rpm to 12000 limit (other than blowing the motor up) you can't go past 100 regardless of power and rpm if there is a "speed" limit

While liability exists over that speed what liability do they share if you are trying to get out of the way of a speeding car or truck and can't accelerate fast enough to get out of harms way...

You'd have to check with powercommander about the mph limit.

Although unless you just want to go 100 mph the speed limits around 75 max so cruising at 80 to 85 works and they are not race bikes.

Don't see where it would be a major issue except for LEO and crooks LOL

I had my 2004 up to 115mph...factory. ok, factory plus stage 1...actually did it with both..... TC88, 5sp. no additional performance changes. that speed thing must be new??!! Now, over 100, wasn't really comfortable anyway..... so I ended up backing off 90 wasn't too bad....

My 03 X cop bike has been up to 120 even before I added anything ,all stock & ran 120 it gets a bit loose feeling at that speed so I did'nt stay there long & like AFN feels good about 85-90

police bikes do not have a rev limiter.......all others do. i believe this "speed limiter" is actually a rev limiter. check the rpms at your maxed out speed....i believe it is going to be about 52/5300 rpms..............

This is a new one on me, never heard of a speed limiter, My 07 SERK (according to puter) will run out at 137 mph, I know it will run 120 with PCIII, But ran it well over 100 before the PCIII was installed.

Thought it was bad enough that i have to put up with speed limiters on these big trucks i drive, Know on bikes, Whats next????

I have an '04 Dyna with stage 1. I can easily hit the rev limiter in lower gears, but it will top 100. Dont know how much over as it gets pretty light in the front at 105 and I ran outa balls.

i don't think that a speed limiter will effect the power to accelerate. when going less than what the speed limiter is set at. if you have to exceed 100mph to avoid a problem, it's to late.

Sounds like the only ones with the 100 mph barrier is the 96in twin cam. But I have an 07 96in with mods that will run well over 100 mph before getting to the rev limiter and thats without being in sixth gear. Sixth gear at 80mph is only about 2800 rpm, Hell in fifth at 80 its only around 3500 rpm and my rev limiter is upped to 6400. And I have to agree if your running over 100 to avoid somthing the out come can not be good!!!!

i may not have said what i said very well. a speed limiter is hooked to the speedo. a rev limiter is hooked to the engine. the rev limiter will limit the top speed only when you reach what your rev limit is, it will be a different depending on what gear you are in. a speed limiter will stop you at a certain speed no matter what gear you are in. if you are going close to 100mph and you think more speed will get you out of trouble, i doubt it. at 25-30 mph maybe. i have accelerated out of trouble at 25-30 several times. but at 25-30 you can look around enough to see what is happening around you, see all possible excape routes. at 90+ you don't have time to see much more than whats straight ahead. or time to try outrunning trouble. i have traveled at 125+ many times. at high speeds you get tunnel vision. faster the smaller the tunnel.

I haven't come across a speed limiter or any reference to one in the manuals. I'll call tech support on Tuesday and get a definate answer. I don't beat a customers bike on test rides and don't think I'd have a job if I got ticketed on a test ride for exceeding 100MPH.

Been gone for a while, the computer gremlins ate my internet access. Bought a new laptop on a Black Friday Sale and got it set up today. The nice thing was the Geek Squad told me they could fix my old Sony Vaio System for $200 and he spent another 4 hours killing viruses and restoring all of my esential software. He has to come back again tommorrow to optimize the system and install 4 meg of memory so it will run as fast as the new machine. The only drawback is I don't know all the key strokes to get Vista to work like I could with XP. I should have gone to a computer technician school instead of MMI!
