[96 Hot Heritage]

I have 96 Heritage that seems like it never gets enough attention because it is always something. Anyhow, when I bought the bike last year I was given a list of all the high performance things that had been done to the bike which is what intrigued me to go with it. Now in hind sight it may not have been the best thing for me to do. Well of the HP items on it was a BDL enclosed belt drive. I personally can not tell the difference in performance between chain and belt. The problem I have not is that the belt is loose. The shop I took it to wants to charge me $1500-$2000 to fix it . I was told that the clutch hub splines and the main drive splines are worn. The remedy from the shop was to rebuild the tranny and replace the hub. My question for any one is how good is BDL products and does any one have any suggestion???????

Get a second or third shop to look at it,

You could always go back to stock parts, clutch basket, comp sprocket chain and compensator sprocket, Those parts are going to be in the $700 range including clutch plates etc You'd want to do a SE clutch plates and spring.

If the belt was too loose or tight for a long time it might have got the clutch hub wobbling around.

I would have someone take a second look to be sure, it might be the issue and at $1 to $2K you should make sure.

I have another shop looking at it now. I am almost certain that what ever the final out come is that I will do the work myself.

I have thought about going back to stock before, but never acted because there were no troubles until now.


Can the main shaft be changed alone or will I have to do a complete rebuild of the tranny???

I will let you know what the next opinion is??

I got my back from the second shop today. They said that the inner clutch hub was worn and definitely needs replaced. The tranny main shaft could possibly be worked with, but it would depend on how loose a new inner hub was on it. If there was no play then obviously it would work, but if there was any slop then I would be in the same situation not to far down the road.

So the issue now is do I stick with BDL or redo the primary with a drive?

Replacing BDL parts now would be the cheap way to go, but are they reliable? Any one got comments about BDL???

What about the main shaft can it be replace alone or does it require a complete changing of gears in tranny??
