| Suzuki across spark plug problem
Hi all, this may be an obvious answer but.......I have a suzuki across 250 which has in the last week popped one of the spark plugs out. I had a look into it and the one spark plug is not gripping the thread when it gets screwed in, resulting in it getting "popped" out from the compression. Is there a way to get it to grip again?
I have tried another spark plug in there and im getting the same results.

| if your handy with tools, go to the auto parts store.....they have helicoils to repair the threads.....if not handy, take it to your favorite indy shop. if you decide to want to try your hand at repairing it yourself, let us know.....it is not a hard job, but it is a critical one........

| You have messed up threads in the cyl head.
While repairable on the bike if you don't know how or what to do, JMO take it to a shop that does, and spend the money. Do it wrong and the heads fubar'd and you're buying a new head, and spending money for the labor to pull it.
If you do then you need to drill, tap and helicoil, I prefer Timeserts, and green locktite it in, otherwise it's coming back out later.
Also do it wrong and leave machining in the cyl and you can have damage.
So be sure you know how and what to do and have the tools.
If you take it to a shop you are looking at having the head pulled, new threads, gaskets and reinstallation.
If you dont have a shop manual and you haven't done this and don't have help and still want to do it get a manual first so you know what is involved and what tools (special ones sometimes) you'll needl, parts etc and compare the costs of doing it yourself vs someone at a shop.

| I like Timeserts to and have a set of them here.
If you have never done this before it can be a bit nerve racking the first time. Like hotroadking suggested might want to take it to a pro as the little bit you spend having it done professionally cane save you hundreds of dollars if you screw it up.

| thanks for that everyone. I just got a quote for getting it rethreaded and its looking around $320. Pulling the head apart and the usual tinkering and maintenance included. Also, I have to get new plug leads as I've had one break. My luck is not going so well right now. I can get them for $2.50 per 100mm. It can plug straight into the cap so there is no worries there. I'll keep updated with it and we'll see how it goes. Thanks again guys. | |
