Starter problems

I have a 03 fxd that when you start it, the motor doesn't turn over.It sounds like the starter is spining, but when I took over the primary cover I could see that the jackshaft is engaged into the starter ring but is not turning.

if im hearing you right
hit button starter bendix engages ringgear and starter turns but bendix/engine doesn't
that tells me the overrun coggs in the bendix are worn/stripped, or your not seeing the bendix spin and the teeth on the bendix are striped (which can soon take out the ringgear)
remove the starter and check the bendix , see if the gear goes both ways, on the shaft, if so there is your problem, or if the gear is shot then
also check the ring gear while the starter is out it might have a spot that the teeth are missing and unfortunatly you found that magical spot
good luck and let us know what you find
