Transmission Bearing Replacement

As I'm about to overhaul my Baker OD 6 Speed, (in unison with a Stroker retrofit on my 2001 FLHR), I wanted to ask about the "Correct" method of removing and replacing the secondary shaft needle bearing inside the tranny. Once the gear cassett has been pulled, this bearing remains inside the gearbox and obviously must be either pressed out of drifted out without doing any damage to the surrounding case material. I must point out that during the installation of the new bearing, it must remain "Usable" as opposed to having been "Gorilla Mounted" A press method would be preferred, but nobody offers such a tool, (that I know of). i would use a "pocket" bearing puller. they come in different sizes, and are easy to use. they will grab the full circumfance of the bearing..........and not destroy the cases..........

there may be other style pullers that will work also........

Other's have indicated that a "Press" method, such as an arbor press would be best for both the removal and install, and that gasket sealer should be applied as both a sealer and lubricant for the replacement bearing. Now, with that being said, my assumption is that the new bearing would be pressed into position from outside the case, on in, with the back of the bearing being supported so as to place the bearing flush with the outside surface of the trans case.This method is good for when the case is out of the frame. For "In frame" installations, a modified ball joint press might work if it can be sandwhiched between the shaft "Centers" with it protruding through the main bearing bore of the trans case.

BAKER MAKES A SPECIAL TOOLTO SERVICE THIS BEARING, I JUST BOUGHT THE 07 + NEWER VERSION COST ME ABOUT $ 180.00 TOU CAN SEE THE WRITE UP ON THIS TOOL IN THE LATEST AIM MAGAZINE. TOM

You can buy a $200 tool for a one time job, or, do as I did.

Pulled the guts on the tranny, stuck it on the trailer and over to the dealer,
For $40 in labor (1/2 hour) they pulled the bearings and replaced them, they have the tools, this was done for the mainshaft, secondary and I had them press in the main gear and tighten the pulley down

If you buy all the tools you'll have $300 to $400 in tools, even if you paid a full hour for the work you'll be ahead doing it this way.

Also if you havent done it consider zippers inner race replacement bearing, or High torque bearing, it eliminates the inner race pressed on the mainshaft and replaces the inner bearing with full bearing in the back of the primary.
