OLD STYLE Adj.- crank em out until snug -then try and turn them by hand - if you can't turn them they are to tight. Should require a little effort to turn, but you will be pretty close to perfect.

If they are crane rods
Tech Tips
For adjustment of the pushrods: rotate the motor until the tappet is at its lowest position in the lifter block. This will assure that the tappet is on the base circle of the camshaft. Extend the pushrod until the pushrod end just touches the pushrod seat in the lifter. At this point the pushrod will have a slight drag while you rotate it. This point is called ?zero lash?. Make a reference mark on the adjuster and extend the pushrod three turns past ?zero lash?. Tighten the locknut.

Andrew say 3 -4 turns and SE are 2 1/2 turns after zero lash.

Depends on the pushrod, you need to get the specific instructions for that adjustable as different manuf use different thread pitch.

Typically you take it to zero lash, ie the pushrod is snug but twistable in your fingers, then tighten about 1 to 2 turns, typically 1.

Then again check the manuf specs.

Take out plugs
Put in 5th
rotate rear tire slowly and get piston on front cyl at TDC. This should put you on the back of the cam.
then adjust the preload on the pushrod one at a time, exh, then intake
Back off then tighten down to Zero lash,
If reinstalling I typically force the lifter to bleed down by going a couple of turns past zero, let it sit and see if the push rod goes loose.
Basically get to zero lash and turn about 1 to 1.5 turns past should do the trick.

From what I understand and to be a little more precise, you want to set the push rods into the hyd lifters (when on the base circle of the cam) approximately 100 thousands of an inch or 0.100". To do that accurately you need to know the thread count of your push rods. They could be as low as 28 threads per inch up to 36 threads per inch.

An example of a push rod with 32 thr/inch (in other words 32 turns to extend the push rod 1 inch) you would need to only go 1/10 of those turns = 3.2 turns.
Or you can count the flats on the hex. 6 flats per turn x 3.2 = 19 flats.

Some guys like to go a flat or two more.

Also, I think most normal lifters (non race) have a total travel of 0.200"

don't forget-- blead down can take as long as 20 minutes. Wait for this before turning the engine.
