Noises

I took my 03 FXDX into the dealer. The engine was making noises. I figured it was the cam chain tensioners.
I got the extended warranty when I bought the bike. So I figured the warranty would fix it.
Turns out the noise wasn't the tensioners but one of the cam bearings puked its guts. They are gonna do a remanufacture on the engine. A total rebuild by the factory, with a 1 year warranty.
I didn't think to ask if when they do a remanufacture on an engine do they upgrade the cam chain and tensioners to the 07 and later chain and hydralic tensioners. I think I'll call and find out.
If your engine starts makings noises and you open the cam case to replace the tensioners, check your cam bearings too. they may be whats making the noise.
I think it was like the bearing in jwolfer's thread "Help Weird Dyno Results"

I would pay extra for them to put the 07 Style tensioners in. The Oil pump in the 07 style is much much better too.
I like the newer chains also.

They said a couple weeks. I still have my other bike to ride, a '75 yamaha XS650, looks rough, runs pretty good. It's light, handles well, it's fun on the back roads. A little to light for any long trips.
I would like to upgrade to the later style parts, just no extra cash right now. Maybe next year after I get the bike paid off. Then I can put the payment toward a few upgrades. Headwork, cams, maybe the 95" kit.

Re: Noises

I got my bike back Saturday. A well spent $54.
I think the engine makes less noise now than it did new.
The Mechanic that did the work has to finish up the paperwork. They will mail me a copy.
I did pick up something from them that the aftermarket charges all most twice as much for. A kit that comes with an adapter that plugs right in, two red turn signal lenses, and a few zip ties. The kit converts the rear turn signals to running lights, and brake lights, as well as turn signals. It cost's $57.95. In the catalogs a Badlands adapter sells for $109 and you have to splice it into the wiring. All you get is the adapter, lenses are extra.
