I want to buy some Rineharts and put them on an '04 twin w/efi and stock ecu. Is there anything else I should do to ensure the engine runs optimum with the pipes?

HD SE air filter kit and a stage 1 upgrade to the ECU or a powercommander with a map to richen up the fuel curve. A complete stage 1 is the best bet, pipes alone may make it too lean, from the factory they are very lean to begin with.

The EFI runs lean to begin with and adding free flowing exhaust only makes it worse if you do not compensate.

hrk...what all is included in a complete stage 1 install? Since I finally got the best brand bike in the world I want to make it run its best and last its longest.

CD...what is your advice on compensation...?? Here in Japan they dont have a machine to map the U.S. bikes...they aren't set up for the American 1HDxxxx...version of a Harley...they only can map Japan/Austrailia 5HDxxxx...versions (so they say). Any great ideas to get mapped properly under those circumstances?

A stage 1 is simply

1) Free flowing air filter system (Ness Big Sucker or HD SE Air Filter system) includes filter, backing plate and hardware to install

2) Better flowing exhaust - Slip ons work well on stage 1, Khrome Werks, Cycle Shack, Hooker Tuneables, etc

3) Tune it, Carb change the pilot jet up a size, open the air fuel mix screw and adjust for optimum idle and maybe the needle, EFI,, A DFO or Powercommander.

The true dual exhausts don't make as much power from what I've been seeing than the slip ons, they sound good, and will drain your wallet but the dynos on the net show they are not great performance wise.

IMHO the easiest way to make your set up work on a 04 EFI is the HD Race Tuner. There is a very good download provided in the software that comes with the Race Tuner and I've used it on numerous bikes with excellent results. You will not have to do a stage one download because the race tuner reprograms your ECU and will also have the ability to make changes as you modify your engine in the future. If you end up going outside of the basic perameters that already have downloads you can then go to a dyno tuning center and have a custom map made for your application. The power commander also is very tunable but does not alter the program in the ECU, it piggybacks the program and then makes changes to the outputs to the injectors fuel output and timing. Just another way to get to the end result. I know the troubles you are experiencing with service in Japan, I was a Bluesuiter stationed at Yokota in the early 80's

The HRT is the way to go if you have a dyno available. The technology is the better of the two for sure. However, (knew that was coming huh? ) There are few dyno's in Japan and fewer wrenches familiar with the EFI and even fewer with HRT experience.

With a PC you have maps that are very close and the program is easy to use in case you need to alter some settings. The HRT is also an option but it is more complex to use especially for the EFI challenged .

A DFO is even simpler still but, does require manual 'tuning' of the EFI. Excellent tech info on their site though.

My .02¢ is to go with the Ness Big Sucker, Rineharts or V&H true duals and any muffler and a PCIII USB. You get all of the Stage I performance gain, better sounds and the ability to tune with beaucoup maps and a good support site.
