Exhaust questions

I have recently taken delivery of a 09 Ultra Classic and I want to change the mufflers. Confused by all the choices. Any input would be great.

Re: Exhaust questions

Choice depends on what you want. There are a zillion or so combinations to get you optimized in different performance bands, and the same goes for different sounds. Your bike right now is set up to get you low emissions and low noise...and any change in pipes will ALMOST always require re-mapping your EFI engine.

two general rules are:
- 2-1 Pipes have the best overall performance
- Shorter/high flow pipes are for getting to high RPMs quick and staying there (not a bagger need, usually)

Just remember almost any change will require a re-map for your year bike. It is a hidden cost. I've known people to change pipes on EFI bikes and not re-map, and they were not happy. Worse performance and burned pipes (black & blue).

Bottom line: figure out what you're looking for and us here can tell ya what might get ya what ya want.

Re: Exhaust questions

You might get away with not remapping IF you do no change the air intake, which I think I would and at least get the download from Harley, they come extremely lean from the factory to meet emmissions, as for pipes its all what you want, go to some bike rallys or someplace with alot of bikes and look around and listen to them and then ask the owner what they have if you like them, that would be your best bet, PS also welcome to the forum, Todd

Re: Exhaust questions

most any slip ons will be fine just don't change the air intake box and no tuning needed

however to get more power you need a ness big sucker air cleaner or similar and a fuel tuning device for the 09 the Powercommander 5 is best, you can add an auto tune module if you wish. Set the base map to stage 1 then let the autotune fine tune it.

Or just setup the base map to a stage 1 and ride...

Re: Exhaust questions

Thanks for all the input. I am thinking of going with the Screaming eagle mufflers from HD. I like the looks and they sound and perform at the level I am comfortable with. Also I will not need to do any extra tuning unless I change the Air Cleaner.
