| Compensator sprocket cover assembly 2 issues.
I have a custom patterned after a 93 softtail. For a while now, a squealing noise comes from the primary area when starting off in 1st gear. it also chirped when i abruptly let off the gas ,putting pressure on the driveline. I have been living with the noise until recently when i heard a loud knocking coming from the primary. Luckily, i was one block from my house. I removed the outer primary and the compensator nut was loose. I think the squealing is coming from the cover assembly. When i built the bike, I used red lok-tite and torqued to 155. Not sure why it loosened.
Anyway, I looked for a new cover assembly and see one in the custom chrome catalog for 28 bucks. And another at J+P cycles for 75. Anyone have a recommendation on what to buy? |

| Re: Compensator sprocket cover assembly Before you retorque the comp nut...take it off and use a dental pick to clean all the locktite out of the threads...a little tedious but they need to be clean to get an accurate torque on the nut, I don't know why they loosen but it happens sometimes(hard acceleration and hard downshifting could be a cause) It happened on my Heritage too started as a squeal then a knock so I cleaned the threads out, a couple drops of red locktite and retorque...problem solved.
I can't see how the cover is making a squeak, it's just a cover.
But if you're going to buy a new cover, remember, more often than not you get what you pay for. |

| Re: Compensator sprocket cover assembly thx for the response. I think the squeal is occurring because the spring inside the cover is either spinning or the sprocket cam is squealing when it contacts the cover assemble. I cleaned out the threads as well and will purchase the pricier J+P model. Let you know how i make out. |
