Hey I was talking with a guy at work the other day. He'd overheard as I was explaining the difference between a fatboy and a road king to a prospective new buyer. I was saying how the Road king would have a few more horsepower due to the rubbermount vs. the power robbing chain counterbalancer when this guy pipes up and says that he just bought a 2004 Fatboy and they told him it was rubbermounted. As softails aren't really my forte I gave him the benefit of the doubt but said I'd be looking it up cuz to my knowledge all softails are rigid mounted and counterbalanced...So who's wrong?

I haven't seen a Factory Fatboy rubbermount. I think they're all counter balanced which is a whole heck of a lot smoother than the older non balanced motors...I still prefer the rubbermounts

Seahag,

Your buddy has been mis-informed by whoever told him his '04 Fatboy has a rubbermounted engine. (Unless he had some type of aftermarket modification)

All softails with the TC88B (B meaning Balanced) have a rigid mount engine with counter-balancers. This allows HD to "rigid mount" the engine to the frame and preserve the "Hardtail Rigid Mount" look that Softails are known for.

The balanced engine is another "hidden" comfort as is the "hidden" rear suspension that allows the Softails to have the look of a hardtail but the ride of a full suspension bike.

Thanks for the confirmation guys...I can't wait to deflate that guy a little bit. I can't stand people who get all cocky like they know it all when they are more than likely wrong. If he believed that ****, from whoever, it just goes to show he doesn't know the product he's buying well enough. I started keeping my mouth shut and learning all I could (mostly through forums like this) since the day I put my name on the waiting list about four years ago.
