The meaning of "Biker" has been hashed, rehashed and turned into a morass of meaningless quotes, phrases and attitudes.

In the same vein, the term 'Bro' has been so over used it is meaningless. Historically, the words Biker and Bro were used to describe a motorcyclist …a member of a gang http://www.answers.com/biker&r=67 and a Bro as a brother or a friend or pal… http://www.answers.com/bro&r=67

I have three blood brothers and a few tight "Bro's" that I know I can count on if I need them. I don’t use the words Bro or Biker lightly or freely. I reserve them for those who have earned my respect as I have their respect.

The word “Bro” has been beaten to absolute death. Someone buys a bike and every rider on the planet becomes his “Bro” and he becomes a Biker? NOT! When you call someone Bro, you are assuming they will be there when you need them and they assume you will be there when needed.

CD, Your last paragraph was short, sweet, and got right to the point. I don't consider myself a "biker" I'm just a guy that loves to ride my bike every chance I get. I have 2 "Bro's" and lots of friends, we all like to have a good time and help each other when we can, because we can.

Ride ON!

Bro is a term I don't use. I have two brothers...I call 'em by name..they deserve that..it's who they are. I am a president of a union..I have sisters and brothers in the local..I call 'em by name. I got a bit of a laugh with Easyrider's "BRo Club" a number of years ago..maybe I'm just getting old and cynical. I know a lot of people but have relatively few friends..they're special...they'll be there for me as I'll be there for them.

I couldn't have said it better. I feel the same way Sleepy. It's just like the word Hero. It gets used way too much and in the wrong situation. Don't take this wrong. I think that our members in the military, police and fire departments are all brave people but they are not all heros. The men and women that play professional sports are not heros either. A hero, in my opinion, are the men and women that go above and beyond what is expected of any rational human being. Charging into a field of fire to save your fellow soldier or soldiers from sure death. The police men and firemen that rushed to the World Trade centers and went up those stairs knowing there was a very good possibility they were going to die but needed to do what they could to save and comfort those in need. These are HEROS.

ROFLMAO...
I haven’t called anyone “Bro” in a very long time, maybe its my self-imposed exile. Just trying to be a good-boy and stay out of trouble.

Ya Know, there are many other groups of people that are tight, Union brothers for example. Some use the term Bro... Thats okay to me.
Me a Biker, yes, if because I like to take on the road on two wheels, a true biker in the sense, no I am not.

What gets me the most is DUDE; like hey "dude" whats going on and "SWEET", I hate the term SWEET! The worst "SWEET DUDE" I want to say hey kiss my a$$ clown.

If you make good friends that last 10+ years, That is a true good friend regardless how you talk to each other.

Sweet! It;s been sometime, thank goodness since I dealt with that. But it reminds me of a story that brought a smile to my face, I hope some of you get a kick out of it also.
My late brother, BR was at Gulfport one year. The band was playing and the crowd ranged from 1%ers to rubs. Br was standing talking some gal up and here comes this drunk on his ass lawyer type with all his genuine Harley Davidson tough guy ****..leather Willy G cap down to His HD engineer boots. He walks up and interupts and says to BR "Hey Bro you and mis sweet meat gonna share the love?" I started to move because BR's idiot tolerence was even lower than mine and at 300 lbs he was like a freaking tank. But instead of bitch slapping the jerk he looked him up and down and said: "Ya know, it's true that my old man had some really BAD taste in women, but i don't even think he would, while on one of his infamous 3 week drunks, be blind or stupid enough to breed with anything that would throw a pup like you, hence I am NOT your bro *******. So carry your "sweet" ass on down the road while you still have all your teeth and braincells......" It was such a put down the idiot just deflated. You could actually SEE him shrinking...lmao. That sort of sums up the concept. BR and I were brothers. When we were riding the highways and when I was visiting him as he wasted away eaten up with cancer. Through nights of MD 20/20 and sitting watching him have to have a respirator to breathe.
Ride Free.....

GreyBear,

You are, in my mind, very fortunate among men to have had such a brother, and lived the life along with it. Respects to BR. Look forward to your words when I read 'em.

Didn't mean to get anyone's back hair standing on end. If I did make a mistake of using words that offended you it was not intentional.
I will try not make a word error ever .
No answer is needed I get the message.

John..for what it's worth, I have no quarrel. I have to admit that some of your posts had me scratching my head in confusion..especially with the real bike thought and the reference to the HA..I could care less what they ride just as I'm sure they don't really care where I'm at. I'll tell you, 20 years ago if you told me that my primary motorcycle would be a Harley Electra Glide I'd have pretty much written you off as a nutbar. I subscribed to the hands before feet theory on limb placement on a motorcycle..we're talking sportbikes here..I still love 'em, got a Yamaha 350 two stroke that will happily hoist the front end up at will. and a Ducati ST that I've ridden on ice, snow and on some occasions, dry pavement..I've done some stupid stuff on the bike and it has bailed me out on a number of occasions..but as good as those bikes are, it's the big Harley that gets the call for most of the rides now..especially the distance rides where I've hooked up with some of the guys here at the Bike talk ride...which is a great time BTW. I'm not going to tell you what to do but I will say what I would do. When I post on a BB such as this my posts are no different than what they would be if you and I were sitting across a table having a beer. You don't have to agree with everything that's said here..just kick back, relax and have fun with it.
Greybear, I'll throw in with Scooter..I really enjoy reading your posts..your brother's story brought a smile to my face as well. What I really appreciate is the partcipation and the insite that you guys that have been around give. The tips and thoughts that guys like yourself pass down..you can't put a price on. Over the years I've met some "Shovelheads that wouldn't give me the time of day because I was riding an Evo..it's nice to see that all of the old guard doesn't think that way.

John, takes a pretty straight shooter to apologize for a post that incenses people. That's how flames wars start and over the years I have had to douse a few. I believe that you can express opinions, displeasure with someone etc without being abusive or mean.

If this is your opinion, stick to it! However, I would recommend using the "preview post" button and reading what you've written before posting it. You might find that if you were the reader, your point would not be clear or sound harsh. A little re-write can make a post that expresses your point of view, is clear and concise and often will get opposing views written in the same vein. To me, debate is one of the tenets of our society. The ability to openly debate issues and opinions is one of things we should cherish as a country.

Oh, if you are curious, I use the preview and edit features quite often. Particularly with subjects that have me a bit twisted!

First for those that managed to get around the typos and had some nice things to say about my posts: I thank you.
Now a word on "flames". First of all I will admit to having to look it up and make sure I knew what it meant.I reckon I do, so I will give my feelings about them.First, if jon or anybody thought that anything I said was flaming, it wasn't. I won't ever say anything here that I wont also look you in the eyes and say to ya. Which brings me to my opinion of why there ARE flames, especially on bike oriented sites. It is because people are faceless and "hidden". They get used to being able to say anything and never worry about having to back it up.When I was a youngster, starting to hang around and learn something, there was just one option. Get out and meet people. And when you are in a bar room full of bikers, you either learn to listen and put your mind in gear before you engage your mouth, or you learn that getting punched out is NOT a great way to spend a Saturday night. And you could always see it coming. And a lot of times some of the older, cooler heads would take somebody aside and explain the facts of life to them before they got in a real bind. Sometimes they were smart enough to listen.
It was a time when people were a bit more respectful to each other, because showing a lack of respect had immediate consequences. Talk about "instant Karma".....
Diversity of opinion is what seprates us from ants. How those opinions are voiced seperates Men from something else. And having the cohonas to apologize when you make an error is always the sign of a man. And jon you hang with your opinions, they are part of what makes you, you, just present them witha bit of respect.
The advise of interacting here as if you were sitting across from folks having a beer is a good one, it keeps things real. Ya'all have a great weekend. Ride Free

I have one genetic brother and a short list of people I call bro, which basically boils down to the 3-4 guys who watched my butt in Iraq and a couple of guys I now work with. Bro is not something that should be thrown around the way it is in these days. Growing up around guys who were Vietnam vets and members of the local club I leraned early on about respect(how given, how earned) and what a Bro really is. To me a Bro is someone you can always count on now questions asked anytime of day and across the country if needed. Most of these "bros" out there have no clue to what it really means. Just my humble opinion.

as more and more relearn the old ways, and STICK to them in their personal lives...I think that just maybe we can take back some of what has been lost. That would include the generic use of bro. It should, and DOES, mean something.
