| I learned yesterday A guy that I have know for some time passed away the other day. He was a biker and rode an 1800 Wing. Ross was a very big man and when he rode his wing he dwarfed it. He weighed well over 350 pounds and always was out of breath but still loved to ride. He was a husband, father of a teenage boy and a respected man in the motorcycle community here. Ross was a very intelligent guy and very respected. He had a weight issue that took his life long before it should have. He passed away of a heart attack in his 40's. I'm sure Ross had plans on more riding and places to go but will now never get that chance. He will be missed by many. We all make choices as to how we live our life and over eating to me is as bad as smoking. Sorry, but smoking is bad and people die all the time from it, but it's there choice just like being over weight is. I think I'm going to reduce my intake and loose a few of those excess pounds. |

As to the weight loss, one thing you might try is the South Beach Diet. You can buy books at the local book store that discribe what it is, how it works, and gives you a food plan to get started. My wife has used it...hardest part for her is the cutting down on carbs and carb counting. Protein is not an issue (but she is not a big meat eater so it has been difficult for her). Seems to work and does not eliminate everything...also, continues to be well balanced. |

Now..I keep hovering right at 200 lbs (5'11") and can't seem to get into the 190s for the life of me. I feel good though. The aches take a little longer to go away and I'm on Lipitor for high cholesterol, but other than that..all my lab values are where I want em including blood pressure at 115/75. My dad was over half bald at age 25. I still got the majority of mine..so I ain't complaining (thanks Mom!)
And as long as I can still ride..I feel young! | You're an inspiration. I'm 44 and just transitioned from over 24 years of military life into civilian life. I'm spending more of my free time PT'ing...trying to live longer...
My blood pressure is also low, normal. I got my scare several months ago and was told to control it with exercise and diet. It works.. |

BTW..finished my last final yesterday and passed em all. I'm finally done with school (at least for a while..wouldn't mind getting my masters, but first things first). Had a party last night at the house with over half my class (mostly 20-something young women). The pool was a little too cold for most to swim (it was 90 degrees out), but they were getting in it any way. Cold water..bikinis What a blast! I had to quit drinking about 8pm as I had to baby-sit the rest of the evening. Oh well..somebody had to do it. |

| Hey Kev, congrats on getting the school done for now. Tough life having to put up with a bit of a pool party eh? My BP is 120/77. I had my scare last year. Things are really busy work wise. I only got out skiing once and didn't get to play hockey all winter. Summer ice is starting up so I should get out some..have some fun with your time off. |

| Congrats SK!!! I know Nursing School is a drag....benifits down the road if it is your calling..... been doing it for too long to know anything else!! Anyway, sounds like you had a good send off to the school....such a pitty about knocking off the drinking to baby sit some bikini action!!! Anyway, have any ideas yet...NICU? ER? First job that comes along? Also, how is that trip around the USA looking??!! I would board ASAP so you don't loose your "knowlege edge"....THEN look for a job at convienience. Just me tho. Let me know if you are San Antonio bound sometime!!!

I would board ASAP so you don't loose your "knowlege edge"......Nurse | I want to work ER, but many require experience first. So most likely do a year in MedSurg Telemetry..get good at regular patient care and knowing how to read those EKG strips. You know..is the patient in v-tach or v-fib..etc. Then do a year in ICU before moving on to ER. For some reason, I liked neuro ICU as I got pretty good at assessing stroke patients that came into ER.
Plan on taking the boards as soon as I can. Gonna get fingerprinted this week (should've done that already when I got my CCW) and apply to the state of Nevada. Been lazy on that, but plan on gettin several NCLEX books and studying those. I've been getting good at being a test taker, which helps even when you don't really know the answer. As you know, nursing tests can have 4 right answers..which one is the best right answer?
As far as riding, I'm going up to Colorado in two weeks, then back there in June for the Colorado 500 ride I've been doing for 10 years. At that point..depending on who I can get to watch the house this summer..I'm riding to all points I can ride to. Don't plan on actually taking a job until late August or so. |
