I just got an email from HD. Is it just me or are those custom paint jobs way, way overpriced? AL

Sorry about that, wish I could have got that website to post. I can only describe some of that "custom" paint work as basic to kind of bizarre with price tags starting at $3500 and going on up to $5500, and thats with exchanging. AL

Damn, that's awful pricey ain't it?? I only paid $200 to have my rear fender painted. Course it don't have any custom murals or anything, but it does match that Glacier white pearl to a "t"....

Well like everything else they think pretty highly of thier "custom" paint. And theres people paying it so more power to 'em. Me I figure custom paints for show bikes and trucks. Bad enough when ya get a scratch or ding in the regular stuff. But to me the idea of something being available to anyone with X number of greenbacks, nation wide, stretches the "custom" title a bit. Don't know about where you are but I know a lot of real good paint and body guys that will do you a one of a kind for less than that.

Was reading this thread and came across this line:
"I Have A 2006 Ultraclassic Purchased In February Of 2006 And It Is The Limited Addition Color Of Dragonfly Green"

Just out of curiousity, what's other folks take on green machines? Me, I guess I am a real dinosaur, cause I won't even park next to one. They have some real pretty ones but.....can't get around that old school taboo.

I Guess I Won't Have Anyone Parking Too Close To Me. Why Would Hd Paint A Bike Green If There Was Some Kind Of Superstition Regarding That Color? I Get A Lot Of Compliments From Both Motorcycle Enthusiast And The General Public.i Am Not Wealthy And I Am Still Making My Note Every Month. I Have Been A Respiratory Therapist For The Last 39 Years And Believe Me There Is No Way I Can Be Wealthy. I Do However Love My Ride And I Am Very Glad I Was At The Dealership When She Was Wheeled Out Onto The Showroom Floor.i Am In The Mobile, alabama Area And I Have Not Seen Another Bike Like Mine.i Will Be Going To Bikeweek In Daytona This Coming Weekend [ I Leave Wednesday For My Brother-in-law's In Jacksonville, florida ]. I Refused To Pay Those Rediculous Motel Rates That Are Triple What They Ordinarily Are When There Is No Event Taking Place. My Scooter Was Purchased In Baton Rouge, louisiana. I Was Born And Raised In New Orleans. I Am A Certified Coonass And Damn Proud Of It. Hope To See Some Of You On The Road, upright.

Everything Sold By Harley Davidson Cost More Than It Really Needs To.why Is It If You Really Surf The Internet You Can Find Similar Products Of Just As Good A Quality For Less? I Guess Harley Has A Customer Base That Allows Them To Continue To Charge Their Followers Inflated Prices.i Have Frequently Considered Trading To Something Else But I Can Never Make The Decision To Follow Through. I Rarely Purchase Anything At The Dealership Unless I Need It Right Then And I Always Look For Sale Merchandise Which Isn't What I Would Call "on Sale". It Cost $8500.00 Dollars To Replace My Fairing, tank, front Fender, lowers, trunk And One Saddlebag [ There Was A Little Bit Of Chrome Involved As Well ] And The Work Was Not Done By Harley But An Independent Which Guaranteed The Work For The Life Of The Bike. There Are A Lot Of Beautiful, more Powerful Machines On The Market For Less Money But I Can't Make Myself Change My Ride.i Hate To Admit My Heart And Ass Belongs To Harley Davidson.

FRXMAS, two points, I wasn't talking limited editions which may someday have value as a collectible I was talking taking off your old tin, sending it out to HD and shelling out over 5 large for a paint job that wouldn't even rank with what you can get from any number of custom painters out there for half that price.
Greybear's reference to green being bad luck goes back aways, it's just something I had always heard. I think it goes back to the days when race cars painted British racing green seemed to have more fatal accidents than other colors, pure superstition but like walking under a ladder for example it is just something a lot of people avoid. BTW my ancestory goes back to LA, my daddy was born in Hammond and there is a street in Alexandria bearing my last name, which is pretty unusual, my mamma always stressed we were not Cajun because we were there before the French were 86'ed from Canada. I Agree That Getting A Very Good Paint Job Certainly Cost Less Than What Hd Charges And There Are Some Very Good Professionals Out There That Will Make Hd Paint Job Look Amateur.the Dragonfly Green Has Gold Metal Flake In It And It Changes Colors Depending On The Light And Time Of Day.the Superstition May Be Due To The Od Green Of The Motorcycles Ridden In The War.

Actually, the "bad luck green" is a hand me down from WWII. The Vets coming back had seen enough green to last a lifetime. And since the dispatch rider was, literally a lone, sitting duck, and the armys bikes were green.....same as three on a match. Most of the guys my Uncle rode with were, like him a WWII vet. (A lot of the women were as well from the Army Nurse Corps). I leaned it was uncool when I was about 13 and painted my old Cushman Eagle bright candy green. They made me repaint it and told me that a green bike was disrespectful to those that died on one. So, with me it stuck.

Is a green bike nowadays any unluckier than another color? I doubt it. Just part of history and tradition. Pure superstition....but like the guy said "How much does it cost to knock wood? Cheap insurance at twice the price!"

Most, beliefs and superstitions have a basis in fact, if you go back far enough.

GreyBear

was in fresno and seen a limited custom, I called it a limited custom paint job on a street glide because with 6500 smacka ronies, you could have one like it, to me it then stops being a custom and becomes a limited custom, but was a very nice job done down in L..A. at a HD sanctioned painter, some of you might have seen it ot westerly, it was titled smokin joe. and greybear I had heard the same story years back. (my dad was WW2)

The green superstition goes back centuries. It also is considered bad luck in racing, wearing green on stage, etc.

If it were true, I guess Kawasaki would've never won anything since they are "green"..... Anyone remember British racing Green?

Here is some interesting info:

I was told by someone a few years ago that the green superstition dates back to the viking days. I have a green/black roadking and it doesn't bother me. I like it. Didn't the Norton 850 Commando come in British racing green?

Cool Link CD. Ill bet that flake is actually gold holographic flake. I used some in conjunction with the candy root beer job I did on my shovel and in the sun it changes colors like a brown trout. Pretty cool stuff. Al
